Hey guys,
I just bought a 2002 RAV-4, and the manual says to use 5w30.
Does anyone know if 5w-20 could be used, about 80% of our driving is going to be city stop-lights...:)

I thought there was a bulletin about toyota back-specing 5w-20 for a bunch of their engines, And I cant seem to find it.

thanks
nick

Just run a good 5w30 and MAKE sure you do not follow the manual (they have 7.5k oci) and change it out every 4-5k or 4-6 months.

The 5w30 SL/SM is a excellent oil and will protect your new rides engine for a long long time!

Here is the TSB. 2006-2007

Take care, Bill

Just to make clear what Bill posted re: the TSB:
Only 5W-20 for the '06-07 Toyota & Scion.
Your 2002 uses 5w30 as spec'd by your manual.

By "good" I'm sure Bill is thinking conventional oil. Run a better synthetic and have no fear of following your owner's manual. I think this one post should answer the Critic's long thread on the "beni's of syn".

Pablo, I am hopeing I misunderstood your post??? Are you saying he should ignore Toyota's warning to not use XW20's in engines that they do not recomend Xw20's in?Grnated I am not one for following every recomendation in an an owners manual but a TSB about wich engines and years can or cannot use a given viscosity is a bit more serious!

By no means am I saying to ignore Toyota's viscosity recommendations.

I am simply stating that a good synthetic oil will have no problem with a 7.5K mile OCI, even in a sludger.

No, Pablo is recommending a syn oil for OCI longer than the owners manual. It is a common occurance here, Bill says conventional 4-5K and pablo chimes in with "the syn angle"

Ah but the owners manual states 7.5k
Bill is saying change sooner its a sludge-r and Pablo
says use syn and dont fear the sludge!
He is not nec. recommendeding an oci exceeding the manual
