Yea, you would have to go with some type of co-gen thing. I understand where you are coming from. We Have PPL. We used 1284KW last month and our bill was $119.63.

I continue to say that small highly efficient window units ate totally the way to go. In the last 15 days the a/c in our bedroom was only 84kw. So really for 16 bucks a month we sleep in 68 F. During the day our other window unit(2) probably use maybe 25 bucks a month. Pretty had to beat that. My next 2 year project is to eliminate the window units and just install them directly in the wall. I have one ready to go as we speak.

I wish that reversible units were available for winter.

We are fortunate bc we have no kids, so this option would be harder for others to deal with.

Yeah $35/month comes basically from running the fridge, the computer, and a couple CF bulbs whenever the sun isn't shining in through the windows.

No air conditioning, gas-fired water heating, brand new energy efficient refrigerator, no deep-freeze, maybe 3 loads of laundry a month and no fans (house is heavily insulated).

Electricity costs ~$80/megawatt hour. Typically use around 0.3 megawatt hour/month, and the balance of the bill, of course, comes from service charges.

Need to buy a new energy efficient furnace (this fall probably), and would like to get tankless hot water heater and waste heat recovery heat exchanger at some point. Would consider an integrated gas-fired furnace/hot water unit if I could find such a product.

I know all of the pool places tell you to run the filter 8-10 hours per day. I realize it depends on the size of your pool/pump. But I have always found that 4 hours a day is enough.

Mine was about $290 last month. Central AC on 24/7, with outside temps around 100. Two televisions, and 2 computers were on 24/7. Outside yard ornamental lights on all night from 8 PM to 7 AM.
But now with college and high school starting, one computer is on 24/7. One TV went to college, the other is not on as much. I am hoping for about $175-200 for next bill. Also am thinking about cutting off the outside lights.

Reading the responses, why does it seem us Texans pay more for power than everyone else, with the exception of Cali?

most of the windows here are blacked out with 2 inches of foil and plastic backed styrofoam. you can buy the stuff at home depot and its actually cheaper per sqft than the pink insulation, and has a beter r value too.
ive also got an active attic fan running on a thermostat.
my hot water heater is only on for 1 hour a day.
when im outside or not home the a/c is turned off, actually every circut breaker in the house is turned off except for the frige.

my bill can be as low as $35 a month, up to $70 a month, depending on the a/c use.

3 month winter Natural gas bill $345, with consumption of 220MJ/day.

$178 (Oz)/month, consider $135 US.

House is fibro (fibre reinforced cement), so it's like Rzero wall insulation.

I paid $88 for a 1200 squre foot apartment. I have to continually harp on my wife to turn every light off/tv off/ computer off when she's not in the room or using it. I am mad when I come home from work and see every light/tv in the entire apartment on when she's reading a book. The place was lit up like a christmas tree!

I have two refrigirators a deep freeze, a 2200sqft house and central heat pump. my new home has not broken 200 a month so far in this hellish Texas summer. My last home was only 300sq ft larger and my utility bills last summer were 350ish.

Having the master bedroom downstairs may be a big help in the new home too. In the cooler months this new home was very energy effecient.

I bought my wife a new frontloading washer set and I think that helped keep me off the Water ticket list with the water nazis despite my supplemental landscaping watering.

Some rain and cooler weather would certainly help everyone out though!

Gary Allen, The power companies on this side of the US do the same thing. They charge us for building the power grid, then charge us a fee to transmit electricity over it. A few years ago they got caught in their scam of elec. co. A selling electricity to company B who would raise the price and sell it back, back and forth it would go and they had to raise our rates cause now electricity was so expensive for them to buy, They got caught they on wire taps, they had power grid operators come forward and testify, they made billions, and nobody got in much trouble over it. Although they did have to refund about 5% of what they ripped us off for!

I was so happy today to get my electric bill.

This past month was the hottest of the summer. I went around and found some windows not sealed and the flue was wide open since I moved in. Our bill was down $25 to $112. I'm so happy because my last house was 1400 sq ft smaller and cost nearly 50% more to heat and cool. It is on a coop that reams the customers.
