I've been using 5w30 valvoline synpower for over 2 years and 20k+ miles now without an issue but wondering if a more robust oil is needed.

The engine is a bone stock bottom end 2.0 liter 6-bolt 4g63 with an oil cooled turbo(hx35 from a '00 dodge ram). Bearing clearances are factory(~.001 IIRC) and balance shafts are removed. Oil squirters are still there. Still on the water cooled oil filter housing and not planning on a larger air cooled setup.

Runs on e85 with ~2000 mile OCI since I'm leery about fuel contamination. Plenty of crankcase ventilation and air fuel ratios are in the 15:1 range cruising and idle and 11.5-12:1 at WOT on the gas scale so it shouldn't necessarily wash the oil with fuel but there is a noticeable smell of e85 when you open the oil cap or drain the oil.

The car is driven to work daily less than 5 miles away- just getting up to coolant temp(~200*F) halfway there. Many road trips and all sorts of weather. 0* to 100* ambient through the seasons. Sees the drag strip often and the occasional small time autocross. The most heat it sees is either hot lapping at the track or multiple 3rd gear pulls while dialing the car in.

A possible "problem" is that it creates a lot of torque(relatively) very soon in the rpm band. ~470 ft lbs @30psi with it coming in before 3k rpm in higher gears. The stock rods and pistons are somewhat heavy too, so 8k rpm probably isn't nice to the rod bearings. It will most likely be revving to around 8500 through the traps since it's now on an auto trans.

I don't have an oil temp or even a pressure gauge so I know it's somewhat of a guess on oil weight and maximum oil temps. It will be addressed but most likely not for a while yet.

I guess it seems like more of a racing oil thread but the car sees way more daily duties than track. I would prefer something that I can get at a local Advance Auto that won't break the bank. Maybe run x oil for a weekend of racing and x oil for commuting? I would think stepping up to a xw-40 would be the minimum change. Mobil 1 5w-40 diesel truck? RT6?

Thank you for your time!

-Matt

I really doubt there is anyone that has your setup that has pin pointed the perfect oil weight and OCI, you are really in the dark with this one given that highly modified engine.

Syn power 5w30 is an excellent oil, now at 30psi in your 4 cyl eclipse, idk if a 30wt is up to the job, I would get a used oil analysis after 2k with the syn power through blackstone just to see what comes back..

My suggestion would be Mobil 1 0w-40, it is an excellent oil proven time and time again in high performance engines, and would flow great at cold temps, and for the OCI.. that could only be determined by used oil analysis, I would go 2k-3k and get a used oil analysis with the 0w40, and see what black stone suggests from there.

+1 and, I'd try to accelerate getting an oil pressure gauge, especially due to the track days.

Is there any worry about it shearing? Or does it use less viscosity improvers? I'm still trying to sort all the info I've read in the past few days :p I swear I've doubled my oil knowledge since then and my awareness of what I don't know is tenfold...

I appreciate the quick replies!

to BITOG!

you have a pretty good thing going with the synpower and short drain intervals. its an excellent oil and will serve you well. you might step up to a 5w40 tho. oil temps are going to skyrocket at the track and you want something that will hold up.

how about a euro 5w40 or 0/40? any big name would work but if you can find it in synpower why switch.

Rotella T6 5w40 is also a good choice but its detergents are so high that i would worry about it foaming at high rpms(6k+)

another option (if you can find it) is German Castrol or GC. heres a link to explain it more

and if all else fails...Redline

Maybe take some of the money you put into this speedster and put a daily driver into your garage ,as you're getting older now it's time to put away the sociopathology that is todays' youth.Faster sooner with less space inside,is not better. The other ego-stroke websites about fast cars are one click away.

That's your opinion gramps....the other websites for your rascal scooter are one click away.

To the original poster...that is a sweet car you have man...my old roomie when I was in school had an eclipse gsx...it had a built 2.4 stroker motor in it with a gt35r turbo....that thing was stupid fast. The bearing clearances were set up for a 40 weight. He used Mobil 1 5w40 and never had a problem....the motor did end up blowing due to some sort of a fuel supply issue and went way lean...I'm a fan of rotella...I would probably use rotella 5w40...fairly cheap and a very good oil...I use this in my streetbike which sees over 16k rpm so I wouldnt worry about it foaming in high rpms like what was mentioned above...anyways good luck with your choice and your car!

Like I said .I knew I'd pull you outta the woodwork.TRAV-99 Guess what ....I'm who knows how old ? WWWAAZZZZUUUP? Newwbbee in life

gramps? that just shows your juvinile tendencies.OMG ,.busted!

I never claimed to be old...but I'm pretty sure the OP never asked for anyone's opinion on a new daily driver...or advice on where to find other forums for fast "ego-stroke" vehicles..he came here looking for oil advice...I'm not aware of a better place for oil advice then right here on this forum.

Redline 5w30.
Ester oil's are better at dealing with the effects of alcohol fuels.
It has the HTHS of a 40-weight, but the KV's of a 30-weight.
Flash point is unsurpassed by any oil that I have read about.
I know you said you wanted a locally-available oil, but since your car is so heavily modified and you're running on E85, I think you're in the realm of boutique oils.

hdeo foams at high rpms. it will work in a pinch if you need zddp but the are better options.

very nice welcome rob aka GRAMPS

Another option is Mobil 1 10W40HM. On the back label,it has a chart listing it as being the best at high temperature protection compared to their other oils. It also has 1000ppm of zddp if extra zinc is needed in your engine.

I have a daughter that's 39...

This grandpa's take on the matter is it's hard to have too much HP, I'd go with one of the 0W or 5W-40 already recommended for both daily and track use...

I use the Mobil 1 0W-40 in my Marauder...

What all did Mitsubishi have in their Eclipse/Talon lineup back then? I remember one that was a turbo AWD (I think?). Was there ever an Eclipse/Talon GST? Was the Dodge Conquest TSI a Mitsubishi product as well?

I agree with this 100%.

OP, you are not going to find the level of protection required for your engine over the parts counter or Wal Mart. You need to step up to a boutique oil like Red Line, Amsoil, Motul 300V, etc...

True synthetics that are listed above will have superior shear resistance, much higher levels of ZDDP (primary anti-wear additive), and Red Line has very high levels of Moly. Convenience of buying local isn't an option for you IMO. Get on the internet and order the good stuff.
