I just got my 98 Ford F150 back from the local mechanic after I had the lower intake and some other gaskets replaced. He used O'Riley 10w30 the for the oil change the little oil change sticker says next change 500 miles out. Any basis for this? It is possible that I had some coolant in my cylinders before the fix. I always do my own oil changes at 3000 but this has me stumped and he is on vacation now. Maybe he meant 5000 but I would not think so with the oil he used.

Its possible, he might just want you to basically flush out the motor to clean up any slight loose material inside. An oil change and filter replace isnt expensive I would say go ahead and do it.

Usually when a mechanic changes a intake gasket coolant enters the engine. When the repair is complete and the oil is changed there's still some old oil/coolant (10-15%) in the engine, another change at 500 miles will insure that 99.9% of the oil will now be coolant free.

if nothingt else, losen the drain plug and see if any water trickles out. remember water is heavier than oil and any weater will be in the pan right at the drain plug.
