$50 paint job

My dad can learn a few things from that guy. His Rustoleum roller paint job on the hood and top of his van is pretty half-a--ed.
 
I've done a rattle can paint job (Jolly Roger/Skull and Bones paint job on a '71 Lincoln...long story...) and I've done a few regular sprays, and I never thought a ROLLER would work so well...but clearly, the key is leveling the paint through keeping it thin and then sanding down the imperfections...

all I can say is WOW...
 
I painted a 1975 Vega notchback with a 50-50 mix of Rustoleum black and navy blue color.

Thing about Rustoleum is the their pre mixed colors to me dont look like appropriate car colors.
The black-blue mix looked good.

Can you go somewhere and get color matched exterior gloss oil paints?

Somewhere in the thread they talk about tintable rustoleum products.

Rustoleum's bright palette reminds me of something you'd paint a Russian car, or a Tata... something cheerful and foreign.

US consumers expect every car to be "Desert sand mica" brownish silver...
 
Hot Rod (Car Craft?) did a similar thing...they painted a car, I think a Falcon, with heavily-thinned RustOleum (about ten very-thin coats) and a roller. Turned out pretty well.

2 weeks ago I paid $4200 to have one of the kids cars painted. It turned out real nice.
In July, I'm having my go to work SUV (RAV) painted. It's only going to be $1400 since it's clean & no side door dinks. Looks like a few spots of clear starting to lift and a little faded on one side.
Still - a far cry from $50. 1st time I've heard & seen pics of a roller job.
 
I painted a few car in my time with "rattle cans" and they came out pretty good!...No, not professional but, garage good considering that the cars were already in their teens when I painted them.

My BIL painted his '71 Suburban(twin side doors and rear doors) with a paint roller and pan using RUSTOLIUM from the pour-it-yourself can. I don't remember if he used qts or gals but, it came out good for a beater. He only used this SUB for hunting/fishing.

He actually became a master at this paint process...No roller marks just lots of orange peel look. And shiny too!
 
Ended up doing this as my major summer project:

$32 for a gallon of Rustoleum sunrise red
$28 for a pint of hardener
$30 for a gallon of acrylic enamel reducer
$12 for a gallon of mineral spirits
$20 for 20 rollers
$59 for sandpaper (150,320,1000,1500,2000 grits)
$24 for disposable paint trays

$205 total cost (plus six weeks of all my spare time and labor).

Samilcar - wow that is impressive for the bucks put into it. I'm to lazy to put the time into it.
This year I paid 4200 to get one of the kids cars painted & turned out very nice.
Then I paid 1400 to have my old work RAV painted by a ma & paw shop and they did a pretty nice job.
I guess I'm too lazy to paint a couple fishing lures that are beat-up too.

Wow, it takes stones to do it in red for a first project: That shows any flaws, and I see none.

They're there, trust me. They're just small flaws, mostly related to my first time body filler work. The one area that I used a long board sander (major dent pulled with a screw dent puller) looks flawless, you can't even tell that there was a repair. The other areas were minor enough that I thought I could get away with using a small block sander to smooth the filler (wrong). These areas show a slight waviness if you look at them from an angle. I'd read that the smoother and flatter you get the paint, the more that any little flaw in the body stands out, and that's definitely the case.

Other flaws were two quarter inch long lines on the edges of panels (front fender and door) that I sanded down to bare metal on the final wet sand. I masked and sprayed these small areas with a rattle can of Rustoleum, and it's a perfect color match
 
Why would anyone use a roller and oil paint when you can buy a spray gun for under $100?

BTW, anyone use a semi-gloss latex on their ride???

Because I didn't want to buy a spray gun for $100, a $500 compressor to supply it with air, and $500 for a proper mask to filter out the isocyanate fumes from the hardener (I have plans to keep my lungs for my retirement years)? Spending $1300 for a paint job on a $500 car wasn't going to happen in my particular case.
