50:1 v's 100:1 pre-mix ratio with Amsoil?

Just wondering. I have a Toro Snowblower (2-stroke) that calls for a 50:1 premix ratio. I'm going to start using Amsoil's Saber Professional ATP mix, but it talks about it being a 100:1 ration. Should I double the dose up and still go with the 50:1 ratio that Toro suggests, or is 100:1 OK to go with since it's a synthetic oil with "low smoke"?

What do you all think?

You'll get all kinds of opinions. I go with the engine manufacturer's recommendation and use Saber at 50:1. The bottle still lists mixes for different ratios, it's just supposed to be _capable_ of being run at 100:1 - it isn't necessary.

If you were a pro-shop that consumed a lot of pre-mix it might be worth it. Even at 50:1 we had a very dry summer and I think I literally used 2 teaspoons of Saber all summer in my trimmer(!!!) I'd rather err on the side of good lubrication than save a teaspoon of Saber.

Maybe I need to buy more two-strokes.

Craig.

Good advice above.

I have been involved in extensive testing of 2 stroke oil ratio's for a major manufacturer (many years ago)

100/1 somewhat more wear, less power.
50/1 enough lube for most applications
32/1 enough lube for all applications except the most agressive Kart engines.
16/1 somewhat more power than other ratio's, no significant increase in engine life. Less carbon in some applications.

Amsoil is a credible company, and if they claim it can be run at 100:1, I believe them. That said, I would never run it that lean in my engines, the main problem I see is the layer of protective oil leftover on all the parts after you shut down - at 100:1 that's a VERY thin layer of oil, and might lead to more rust and startup wear.

As someone else said, you'll use so little of it, there's really no reason not to double up.

Thanks for your help. I think I will just keep with the mfg's 50:1 ratio.
Thanks again!

You can run 50:1 with no problems. You can run 100:1 with no problems. Or any ratio in between. I've had folks use 100:1 for YEARS and the engines are fine. Would I run ATP 100:1 in a race bike or cart in the middle of the summer? NO, because it's the wrong application.
