What do you guys do with the extra oil when you buy 5 qts? My car says it takes 3.9 I am coming up on 1500 miles and at 90% on the MM. A guy at work with a 2007 is at 4000 miles and is at 50%. That could be a lot of months before an oil change. The way it was always recommended to me if I was going to do my own oil changes I should keep all receipts and make sure everything is well documented. Also the receipt for the oil and filter should be as close to the date of change as possible. I have seen some that buy oil on sale and stock up. I can understand the company saying just because you bought oil or a filter several months ago doesn!t prove you changed it now. Obviously the leftover oil would not go bad after several months but I was just wondering what your thoughts were on long periods between purchase as far as receipt dating vs oil and filter change dates as it relates to warranty by the company.

Ive been wondering how I'll file my oci's in my records too since buying two jugs. I normally just buy the filter and oil when I change the oil as proof that I did it so its much easier to follow mentally when youre looking thru the records. I guess I'll photocopy the receipt so I can use the copy as proof of oil for my other vehicle when I change the oil later on. I already purchased a filter beforehand as well so that will not be proof of oci date either other than me writing that I changed the oil and including my signiture and the date when I changed the oil on the receipt. I dont think it will be a problem since its widely known that many people buy in bulk.

I'm too also worried about keeping records. Now that I think im gonna go with Amsoil how do I explain to someone that changing it at 15 to 20k is a normal thing. I guess I could use my used oil analysis as proof the oil was still good, but still, some might not buy into it. I guess it does not matter since i dont have any plans to sell the car, but just something to think about.

I'd do an oil change to each of the lawn tools with the other 1.1 quarts. If I had anything left, I'd put it on door hinges, sliding drawers, and locks.
Buy a car that takes 5 or 6 Qts.That is the hard core solution.
Both of ours take 4 1/2 quarts so I buy just the gallon Castrol or Pennzoil from Advance and one extra quart.

Save the extra quart and keep buying the 5q jugs and by the 5th oil change you don't have to buy any oil. All three cars in my family take 4q of oil. Most of the time I get the 1q bottles but sometimes I get the 5q and I combine it with stray 1q containers that I got from 5 single quart deals and have a mix of stuff. Next oil change on my dad's van will have 1q Maxlife 5w30 blend, 1q Quaker State 5w30, 1q Pennzoil 5w30, and 1q Shell 10w30.
I have two jugs of oil right now. 1 bottle of Pennzoil 5w30 with about 2 quarts in it and 1 bottle of Castrol GTX 10w40 with about 1 quart in it. I will probably use the GTX to top off the car that has it in there right now and the Pennzoil will probably be finished up in the next OCI for my sister's Sentra.
I don't bother with anything other than gallon or quart size purchases. Every vehicle I work on has a different refill requirement and none are exactly 5 quarts. For years 5 quarts was a standard fill on lots of cars and trucks, but those days are gone.
4 quarts go into the sump, and the fifth quart ends up in a de-labeled clear QS bottle and rides in the trunk in case I need to top off during the OCI.
The old oil goes into the jug for recycling.
As for documenting oil changes, I'm not sure what will satisfy Honda. I've started a maintenance log, I've scanned all my oil and parts receipts into PDFs, and I lit a votive candle at the Catholic church down the street. Not sure whether I need a candle at every oil change or just when I change the filter.
