I have a 05 Ford Explorer 4.0 4x4 w/50k and I live in Central Virginia. I just cleared out WM of QS Torque 5 & 10w30 and was wondering if I should run the 10w30 in the summer or save it till the engine has alot more miles on it?

run it in the summer, switch to 5w30 in the winter. that's what i do and we are in similar climates. my car calls for either one based on ambient temp

i did the same thing at WM here, lol. can't beat 5qts of full synth for $11!!

Use the 5w30 it is better on a cold start up even in the summer the 10w30 takes longer to get into the bearings and to lubricate the upper half of the engine... If this was 1980 then i would say the 10w30 but today with sm oils it is a different story.
In either case in the summer it would not matter too much.

Torque Power doesn't seem to have much, if any pour point depressants. The pour point of Torque Power 5w30 is -33C (10W-30 is -30C), while the pour point of Horse Power is -45C for both 5W and 10w30.

The kinematic viscosity at 40C is 57.45 for the 5w30, and 64.97 for the 10w30. That's not a very significant difference. I don't think you are going to see much difference between the two, even when it's cold.

Where you live 10-30 is great year round. I've used M1 10-30 in Illinois and Maine for years with long lived engines. Never wore one out.

Thnaks for all of the advice. I think I will use up the 10w30 first since I have more of the 5w30.

A 10w30 syn will flow as good, if not better in the winter than a 5w30 dino, IMHO. Use it all year long. Great sleeper oil...

I always thought, if either is acceptable for the engine (according to the manual) that a 5w30 oil is still always better than a 10w30, because it will almost always have a better viscosity index... ???

This isn't necessarily true, especially with the Torque Power. Its pour point isn't as good as most other synthetic oils.

i think the case may be that at exremely cold temps, the cranking viscosity of the synthetic 10w30 may be more favourable than that of a mineral 5w30. remember the XXw part is measured at 40 deg centigrade. at -40 degrees the vic\scosity curves of cSt vs temperatures may not agree due to differing properties. These oils' curves would differ at 40 deg C but be similar at 100 deg C

Whether he uses 5w30 or 10w30, it's really not going to make much difference in VA...

I think he might be slightly better off using the 5w30 in winter and the 10w30 in summer, but the difference is probably negligible...
