I bought some Valvoline motor oil today in what I thought was a 5 quart container but when I got home I discovered it is actually 5 litres (5.28 quarts). So is it a good idea to add the full amount or measure out 5 quarts? My car (Saturn Ion) takes 5 quarts.

Over filling by that much really shouldn't hurt anything. If you had an oversize filter that would help a bit

I`ve always wondered what`s up with the 5.28? Why not just an even 5? Does WM have a patent on the 5 qt jugs?

The fill is not that accurate, I have found that with oil, you can substitute Quarts and Liters and vice versa.

Go ahead and fill it up, you got some extra insurance oil for free. I can't believe they still sell oil in quarts, that's so 1970's...

Recently, I had two unopened jugs of PYB sitting side by side and noted over 1/2-3/4 inch difference between the two when viewing the see-thru panel.

It probably wont hurt but...when you drain your oil there is always some left, you can't get it all out and 5L is approx. 5 and 3/10 of a qt. you could actually end up with a 1/2 qt extra in your crankcase. Sooo, if you want to be more precise leave yourself a little in the bottle for a rainy day.

Yes, I have always heard that there is some oil left in an engine after draining the oil-perhaps as much as half a quart of oil. So the fact that there is actually more oil in the 5 litre container compared to the five quart container does worry me somewhat. I think I will measure out 5 quarts and use the rest as an add oil. I don't know how much overfill is allowed in a Saturn Ion Ecotec engine. But half a quart would probably be a little excessive. I don't worry if there is a little too much oil. I figure it provides a safety margin. Just so long as there is not too much oil.

I think jugs are a pain in the neck. I once bought a 5+ quart jug for a car that takes a 4.5 quart oc. After draining 24 oz out of the jug it was still overfilled.

If you haven't already changed the oil you should use dparm's method:

* I have only seen 5+ qrt. show up at Auto Zone.
* Many modern sumps hold more than 4.5 or 5.0 qrts.
* Would much rathor buy a 5+ qrt jug than a 4 qrt jug + 1 qrt.

AutoZones' website list only 5 liter jugs. I haven't been in an AZ to confirm.

I got the jug at Autozone. It is 5 litres alright. I thought it was a 5 quart jug until I got home. It states on the container that it contains 1 litre (spelled liter) or 5.28 quarts.

I guess they are going to the metric system.

yeah i dont get the 5+ quart jugs, most all american cars are measured in quarts, wich is why i dont understand the + ?
