5.4 Ford: 7 quarts?

I recently picked up a '98 Ford E-250 with a 5.4. When I changed the oil, I had six qts. of Castrol 5w30, and a Fram HM2. After installing oil and filter, and running the engine, the dipstick showed a quart low, right on the line. I added a quart, and it was right at the full line. This was last night, and I checked it again today after driving about 40 miles, and it was right at the full line.

So I guess when I change my oil in the future, I need to have 7 quarts handy?

Yup, those take anywhere from 6.5-7 quarts.

5.4s of that era are 6.5 to 7. My 1999 in my sig is ~7.

How much does a late 90's 4.6 hold?

I think the owners manual on those says 6 quarts, but it wouldn't surprise me if it took more to actually hit the full mark. I have a 3V 5.4 and my owners manual says 7 quarts, but it seems to take 1/2-3/4 quart more to hit the full mark so I always just put in 8 quarts.

IIRC, 5 quarts in the Crown Vic, T-Bird, etc, and 6 quarts in the trucks/vans.

I don't know about the 5.4, but that era of V-10 ford the OM said 6 qts, but the dipsticks would read 1 qt low at 6 qts. There was a TSB that the dipsticks were actually wrong. Engines should be 6qts.

There are 2 different dipsticks, one with a T-handle end, and one with a O (circle) end. One is right (6qts), one is wrong (7qts). I have the wrong one in my motorhome. But I cannot remember which it is, and the MH is 3.5 hrs away.
I know Ford was giving new dipsticks free of charge at one point, but not anymore.

My V-10 will burn that 7th qt, but will not burn any if I only put in 6qts. OCI are very short. I've changed oil 2 or 3 times, and only put about 5k miles in 6 yrs.

Anyway, maybe something for you guys to check into.

My 2005 F-150 5.4 3 valve takes 7 quarts. That's also what it shows in the owner's manual.
