5-30, 10-30 problem

I bought a 2007 Ford Mustang the otherday with 44,000 miles. Questioning the seller he stated he did his own oil changes. The car is a V6 and Ford calls for 5w30 oil. The seller said he runs 10-30 in the winter and 10-40 in the summer. Never 5-30 as he thought it was to light.I live in the desert part of my state and summers get to the 90's for a few momnths and winter some times 17 above zero, but usually in the 30's. This car will not be run in the winter except on occasion at 40 plus degrees outside. I think just 10-30 all year should be fine as it has never run on 5-30. Thinking of using Mobil 1 as that is what I use in my other vehicles. Any thought and opinions are welcome. Thanks,Spad
 
It doesn't make a lick of difference if the car has never run 5w30, you can easily switch to it, 30 grade is 30 grade when it gets up to temp. 5w30 will flow to your engine faster at start-up which is a good thing. 10w30 will work though.
 
Run either 10w30 or 5w30....at operating temps the difference is nill. Nothing wrong with a 5w30. Id run that so that you get oil perhaps just a little faster to the parts on a cold day.
 
Why would 5w30 be "too light", especially at OT?

It's an old myth that if the oil is "thin" when pouring out of the bottle, it won't protect the engine. That's why people think it's too light.
 
hominid7, My Ford manual calls for 5-30 in the V6. I am interested in the difference between the 5 and the 10 after reading the replys here. Have to read what Dexos1 is.This is quite the site for oil information. Spad

Dexos1 is just a certification for GM engines. For example, Mobil 1 5w30 and Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 are both dexos1 certified/approved.

If you are looking for a good 5w30, Motorcraft synthetic blend 5w30 is hard to beat.
 
I'll probably end up with Mobil 1, I have it in my other cars and I like it. Read up on the Dexos and finally getting up to speed on all the changes that have been happening to motor oil specs. Thanks for the replys. Great site. Spad
 
I keep reading that 10W30 has a higher operating viscosity than 5W30 and that is shears less. As in this thread, the argument gets refined to conventional oils only. Can someone post evidence that within the same brand that the viscosity of 10W30 is measurably different than that of 5W30 at operating temperature. It is easy to say that it is true, but I have not been able to substantiate that statement with a modern oil with modern VIIs. I would be pleased to accept this position, but I can't find any data to support it. I can find data to support that it is not true -- just take the time to look at the pds of any major brands.

A 5W30 can be thicker than a 10W60. You have to look at the HTHS and other specs in the PDS as you stated.
 
There will be more additives in the 5w30 then the 10w30 simply because the 2 viscosities are further apart. And forget the ford back spec to 5w-20. In my mustang I use 0w-40. The 4.6 lives in the upper revs

I can support what you already know, that they are extremely close in viscosity at 100*C (212*F). Look at this post I made in another 5w30 vs. 10w30 thread.

Amsoil 10w30 is actually very close to the same viscosity @ 32*F as Mobil 1 5w30 (non-EP). The base stock used in a formulation makes a difference, and Mobil 1 5w30 (non-EP) does contain a percentage of group III. Amsoil 10w30 ATM contains no group III base stocks.

I think numbers in pds represent virgin oil. In used oil reports 5w30 has slightly lower "should be" viscosity range because it's blended with thinner base oils. Since cool oil is too thick to give the best protection during warm-up I guess the lighter grade is the best choice for low miles vehicles.
