Since you failed to mention the vehcicle, let us take a guess and say you are talking about your Ford Focus....lol. Isn't that what Ford recommends anyways? What is a "tsb" and what does this "tsb" say?

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin

Woo haa, my auto shop class is paying off!(?)javascript:void(0)

In 2000 the said to use 5-30 than in 2001 all of the fords went to 5-20 so ford put a technial service bulletin out for all order fords to use 5-20 in stead of 5-30

true, and if you go to the ford dealer in yorkville NY, they will still put 5w30 in it because "it doesn't really matter and it's only to save gas"
their words, not mine

No it's because they only have 5w30 in the big 5000 gallon bulk recycled oil tank out back which by the way is the only oil they have except the 5 bottles of Motorcraft in the display case on the showroom floor. Plus, who cares about stupid things like fuel econmy or engine tolerances......

We use Motorcraft 5W20 semi-synthetic in both our vehicles. Next several oil changes will be Havoline 5W20 synthetic that I bought at Big Lots on clearance.

The 5w20 will give you better fuel economy and probably as good or better wear unless you really beat on your car (lots of WOT etc) in that case or if you live in the south the 5w30 may be a better choice for wear. Only a UOA for your car will tell the real story.

Go look at the viscosity of 5W-20 and 5w30 at operating temp and then guess what the big deal is. Flow improves with 20. Wear has shown to be a wash with UOA. Use either as a lot of 30 are almost 20's and a lot of 20's are almost 30's. Not that big of a difference. Use what makes you feel all warm and fuzzy. Either works fine.

I put 5w-20 in our 2001 Focus and still use 5w30 in my 2004 Neon even thought they spec'd 5W-20 in the identical engine in '05. Nothing to loose sleep over. If it still bothers you get a UOA of 30 and then one of 20.
