I just bought a 2006 4Runner V8 with 20k miles which has lived on "free" dealer oil changes with ???????? cheapo oil (the manual specs 5W30). I want this rig to last for a long time so I am going to change it to a high-quality synthetic. Can someone please suggest a good year-round oil for my rig?

The easiest and cheapest option would be M1 5W30 but I am also considering Redline 5W30 or maybe some 0W30 options since it will see cold winter mornings.

Thanks guys

Amsoil 5W-30 if you really want to last long, M1 is ok but Amsoil is better in wear protection

0W-30 costs a little bit more than 5W-30 if u willing to pay

but if dealer give u free oil change for life than i would jump at it and change every 3k miles, same protection

I've been running Red Line 5w-30 in my 03 V8 4Runner and recently switched to RLI Biosyn 10w-30 HD. The 2UZ-FE engine is the definition of bullet proof. I did a uoa about 2/3 years ago but it was very boring. I'm looking around for a copy now, but it was very boring, nothing of note which is just what I like. I'm also running their gas additive at 1 oz/15 gallons of gas.

I would like to change the oil every 6000 miles.

Redline is approx 40% more expensive than M1. Will the RL do anything for me in this engine?

What do you guys think about a 0W30 in this engine?

For 6K OCIs & staying price conscious, go to your nearest Wall Of China store & purchase the 5 quart jugs. Quaker State, Pennzoil Platinum and Castrol Syntec are now under $20. I would suggest QS for starters. Could be the brand you end-up with years later too. I prefer it over Platinum & Syntec in your viscosity range.

I am not that price conscious and I want to use a full synthetic in my 4.7L V8.

I am getting the sense that the group feels this engine is very long lasting and easy on oil so I should probably stick with the cheaper option - M1 5W30.

Im currently using Amsoil Series 3000. The oil has been in the case since March and with 6000 miles, alot of those miles are short trips the oil has held up very well. Thats using my calibrated eye, hehe. Im doing a change at the start of next month.

Does the engine require syn oil ? what do you expect to gain by using syn oil .

Not a good idea. If you've been reading this board for any length of time you would know that M1 5W-30 has been the subject of many noise complaints, oil consumption, and high iron numbers. If you're wanting your Toyota V8 to last a long time like you mentioned in your earlier post, you might want to choose a different oil.

M1 oils in the the heavier grades have been doing fine, but you're wanting to stay with a 5W-30.

PP is definently a good choice. You do have a bullet-proof engine though...pretty boring. I have seen zero issues with the V8 4-Runners. I think even a good quality dino is fine with this motor. Amsoil? Great stuff.

Sorry but what is "PP"? I trust that this engine will last on dino oil but synthetic makes me feel better

I hadn't realized that M1 5W30 had such a bad rep

Maybe I should stick with the Redline.

It doesn't have a bad wrap; it's just that I've compiled all of the complaints from multiple posts from various board members and have formed my own harsh opinion of the oil. That doesn't mean everyone is going to experience problems with M1, it just means that I and I only have taken notice to an unfavourably high percentage of complaints from M1's thinner grades. To be fair, I've never used M1 myself.

I would use 5w-30 Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic with a quality filter. It is highly regarded and is offered many times on sale such as rebates and buy one get one free deals.
