I saw the button on my dash, like my 07 PreRunner has.

But in the 4th gen 4Runner, the button locks the differential in the T-case. Basically putting the drivetrain into part-time 4wd. The V6 4th gen has multi-mode 4wd. A versatile system. It allows 2wd, full-time 4wd (diff in T-case unlocked) or part-time 4wd (diff in T-case locked).

As I mentioned the only 4th gen that had a locking rear diff, was the '09 Trail Edition.

That’s cool!

So, do any of the 5th Gen 4Runners have a locking center diff or front diff? I knew some had the locking rear diff.

The Limited 4wd 5th gen has full-time 4wd, with the ability to lock the diff in the T-case, which should only be used when wheelslip can ease any potential drivetrain binding. Putting it into essentially part-time 4wd, so it then works just like the SR5 and various TRD models, which do not have a differential in their respective T-cases.

The 5th gen SR5 and TRD models with 4wd are part-time 4wd only. So their 4wd should only be used in conditions where the wheels can slip, and not cause drivetrain binding, which could cause breakage of parts in the drivetrain. A part-time 4wd system in the 4Runner would have to be abused pretty severely, to actually break parts though.

Only the Early 5th gen Trail models, or the later TRD models, have the locking rear diff.

No 4Runner has ever had a locking front diff from the factory. Of course there are aftermarket front lockers available.

I really don't think you need any more, both go up hill through a foot of snow...nothing really does more once the frame is hung up.

one advantage the Lexus has is once the frame hangs up you can inflate the air suspension and back out..it works great.

I can't believe I missed this thread! Here's my 2004 4Runner. It currently has 202k miles on it. It has Old Man Emu suspension on it, Freedom Off-Road UCA, FJ Cruiser steel wheels, 255/80-17 Toyo MT's and an RCI skid plate. I installed all the suspension parts back in June, replacing worn out Bilstein 5100's and stock UCA's and LCA's.

Future plans include 4.56 gears, ARB rear locker, Demello front bumper and sliders and a Victory 4x4 rear bumper.
