Hi,

What fluid does this take and what are some good fluids to run in there meeting the Ford spec? Of course my owners manual disappeared before my time.

TIA

You can go onto the Ford website and obtain a free digital copy of your manual. Just did it for my truck. But that should be a Mercon V I think. Which is backward compatible I believe with Mercon LV.

Ford spec'd the older mercon but switched it to merc V later on so the older stuff should still work but the newer V can do longer drains. Walmart sells the mercon v only fluid for a good price. Castrol transmax should work fine as I've used it before and it lists merc V but some don't like universal fluids and I get that.

Napa also has a sale on their napa branded valvoline made mercon V. Doesn't let me order only pick up so you may not get enough.

Supertech Mercon V is the best deal going for that era Ford that needs that spec, it’s what I use in a Ford ax4n for fluid maintenance that specs V, works great and price is right, I believe it’s also officially approved by Ford

The tranny dipstick tells you right on the top...does it not?

Oddly, the 4R100 on my 98 truck calls for MERCON, but the exact same tranny in your year called for MERCON-V(I believe)
It used to be "you'll blow your tranny if you switch from one to the other" but these days there a multiple "multi-spec" ATFs.

It just says Mercon on my dipstick but no "V" on it.

Walmart didn't have the 17 gallons that I will ultimately need. Easy 35 bucks to meet free shipping criteria.

To the poster who mentioned the Valvoline import. Can I ask you more about your choice? I have plenty laying around for my subarus.

Thanks.

I have been using it for a while maybe 40K. Before that I used generic Dex/Merc. I chose the Valvoline Import since is is synthetic and $18-20 a gallon. I like that it claims Mercon compatible and not Mercon V. People will say V is fine and it might be. My manual ,written when Ford was on the hook for warranty when both Mercon and V were current formulas, says they are not interchangeable.

Mercon ~1986-1996

Mercon V 96-05
That quote was so strange. It flipped the wrong people.

BTW - I looked at the Valvoline High Milage ATF and the specs were funny. It listed multi vehicle and Dexron II, II and VI. But only listed Mercon LV and not specifically V. Just a funny observation.

If it originally specd Mercon like my 94, I went with Valvoline MV Import synthetic, it has Dex/Merc. If Mercon V I went with M1 ATF in my Expedition.

My owners manual for my 98 F150 with the 4R100 says the same thing, dipstick says MERCON on it. Manual says NOT to use MV.
I just use the ST DEX/MERC
