4R100 2002 Excursion 7.3 Diesel 4x4 transmission fluid?

Ford spec'd the older mercon but switched it to merc V later on so the older stuff should still work but the newer V can do longer drains. Walmart sells the mercon v only fluid for a good price. Castrol transmax should work fine as I've used it before and it lists merc V but some don't like universal fluids and I get that.

Napa also has a sale on their napa branded valvoline made mercon V. Doesn't let me order only pick up so you may not get enough.

The tranny dipstick tells you right on the top...does it not?
Oddly, the 4R100 on my 98 truck calls for MERCON, but the exact same tranny in your year called for MERCON-V(I believe)
It used to be "you'll blow your tranny if you switch from one to the other" but these days there a multiple "multi-spec" ATFs.
Anything meeting Mercon V. LV was not approved for the 4R100 like it was for the 5R110.
You can use Mercon V.

It should say on the dipstick but you can get a manual off ebay. My 2000 calls for Mercon and prohibits Mercon V. Later they claimed V was ok. I use Valvoline Import.

You can go onto the Ford website and obtain a free digital copy of your manual. Just did it for my truck. But that should be a Mercon V I think.

It just says Mercon on my dipstick but no "V" on it.

I have been using it for a while maybe 40K. Before that I used generic Dex/Merc. I chose the Valvoline Import since is is synthetic and $18-20 a gallon. I like that it claims Mercon compatible and not Mercon V. People will say V is fine and it might be. My manual ,written when Ford was on the hook for warranty when both Mercon and V were current formulas, says they are not interchangeable.
That quote was so strange. It flipped the wrong people.
BTW - I looked at the Valvoline High Milage ATF and the specs were funny. It listed multi vehicle and Dexron II, II and VI. But only listed Mercon LV and not specifically V. Just a funny observation.
If it originally specd Mercon like my 94, I went with Valvoline MV Import synthetic, it has Dex/Merc. If Mercon V I went with M1 ATF in my Expedition.
