Impressive, but at 40k miles I think you got your money's worth, and I would put fresh oil in.

Hmm. I think when the oil is drained from the sump, it inevitably gets contaminated with silicon particles: dirt, dust, etc.

Is there a good way to filter the oil before putting it back?

It would be easier to run the oil slowly through a roll of toilet paper (even without the fancy Frantz housing)

For me: Reusing the oil? No way. 40K oci, no way. Interesting read, yes. Thanks for posting.

I think he posted recently about it, so I doubt it's been crushed.

Thanks for bringing this thread back to life. I was looking for a great example to give my son-in-law of why not to buy a used car. It is also and excellent example of those in the BITOG crowd that have completely lost touch with reality in thinking that saving money on oil is the most important aspect of automotive maintenance. Reminds me a lot of a guy I knew early in my AF career (1973) who had a beautiful 1970 454 Corvette (he kept it clean and shiny). The beauty was only skin deep. He had not changed the oil in almost 20K miles. The oil had the look and consistency of tar. He looked at me with a straight face and said "Oil is like everything else on a car. It needs to be broken in." I was surprised the car was still running. Actually made me sick to my stomach. What a pathetic example of abuse of a fine piece of machinery.

I had that in a 92 sunbird Se. hehe special edition, three speed auto and would run forever.
I think I put 77k. Lies on that in less than three years and never a problem.

Still going strong. Did a 6000 mile run to the east coast and back in late summer. Still good as new. Over 50k now on the same oil change.

Needs a new exhaust manifold gasket (or exhaust manifold, not sure yet) on the front bank of cylinders. Which I might not be able to do without removing the A/C compressor (R-12, so that's a whole can of worms!). So that might be the end of it. But definitely nothing wrong with the engine, and the pictures I provided at the beginning of the thread prove that there's nothing wrong with an extreme drain at least with that engine/oil combo.

I don't think anyone can possibly make an argument that exhaust manifold and/or exhaust manifold gasket failure would be related to motor oil, eh?

Very nice use of the oil.:) I guess I can relax a bit as I'm coming up 20,000 miles on my V10 triton and 30,000 miles on my Cummins with no oil changes. Mind you that's using oil analysis with bypass filtration.

Just an update, and some more pictures. Now at ~58k miles since my last oil change. Front valve cover came off today to service the gasket:
