Hello and good afternoon all:) Wanna do a flush soon. 98 corolla. Has burned oil, about half/quart conventional oil, Pennzoil conventional, every 700 miles it seems. SO bought liqui moly, and wanna try it asa flush. The oil looks molasses black cold, dipstick, but after running, looks brownvery undetectable gold tint left. lots of stop n go traffic. been in for 4 months now, 3, 400 miles.
my plan..bought zmax and see if it cleans ok, the rings. wanted too try duralube fuelsystem cleaner, half a tank left. Last oil change, used a fram tough guard. Now, i do know, their rated for 10,000 miles. since im near 4000 miles, and for a flush, its recommended to use a new filter, should/could i just use the tough guard on it now?
I have a bunch of 3614 filters, all various, i bought years ago, when i had my 95 neon. their not specifically for the 98 corolla, so thought i could just use them for flushes. I dont belive the inner diameter gasket of hte 3614's will be sufficient in completey cpvering the oil adapter.
so...old filter? or new filter for flush!

I had thought about re using the tough guard, but with the condition the oil looks, i have no way of knowing if its in bypass, the gasket will reseal too the adapter. if its rated for 10,000 miles, but with a known sludger..its a waste not too re use it. but at same time, the variables could have rendered the filter used.

Thats what i thought.. new filter. geesh hate wasting something that could go further.
Should i use a new filter for the flush? or the tough guard then?

Have you considered trying a piston soak over night? Might help free up the rings if that's what's causing the oil burn.

If you want to flush I really don't see the harm in it.

might try that..a piston soak! MMO or berryman b 12?
i put 2=3 ozsin, leave overnight, with plugs in, then start it up? or get the 2-3 ozs out?
figured if i burnt 1 quart of Pennzoil Conventional in 1,000 miles, mostly stopn go traffic, 4 months, the condition the tough guard media might be in?

Consider an overnight piston soak and keep things simple with a Fram Extra Guard and Walmart's SuperTech brand of oil repeated several times until the oil is coming out clean.

If it is not meant for the OEM specs it might cause a huge leak down the road.

Get a new filter, cheap insurance

Just enough to cover the top. I would leave them off unless you go with berrymans in which case it would probably evaporate. I like MMO but I can't denie Berry's cleaning ability.

To make it simply tho just go with MMO leave the park plugs out and start it in the morning just enough to cycle the motor a little (spark plugs out). Put the plugs back in and your done. Wrap up with the flush if you choose and change the oil. 2 birds one stone.

You can try a home-brew solvent.
For parts cleaning I mix 50/50 mineral spirits and lacquer thinner (acetone).
Rock the crankshaft back and fourth a bit a couple times during the soak.

Btw, equal parts paint thinner, lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol makes a pretty good paint stripper.

I really really caution against doing any kinds of flush. Short change the oil a couple of times if you must. Many know here I own a wrecker company and have my own full service department. We do everything from maintenance to transmission rebuilds in house. As an offshoot of my tow company I own a used car dealership so we work on everything in house. I deal with mostly older and high mileage cars. I have a relative that is a complete green-horn know-it-all mechanic. He does work at a high end dealership and is very book smart but just doesn't have experience yet. He has been bugging my sister to do a flush on her 190,000 miles SUV that my shop has always maintained for her since she got the SUV with about 60,000 miles on it. I got her the car. We have changed the oil and filter at 12k OCIs using Mag1 5w30 full syn. He hates my choice of oil and has a love for all of the premium boutique oils. The engine has been using 2-3 qts between oil changes. My opinion is this is normal for an engine with this high of mileage and in-line with almost normal consumption for this particular V6. Anyway he convinced he pr I have done her SUV a dis-service and take her into doing a flush using all kinds of majic potions with multiple short fill and drains ect. Inside any engine there is some sludge and build-up as an engine wears and has miles on it. This is normal to a degree. Some engine more than others. When you flush them and try to break that [censored] up it can clog small oil passages and cause an oil related failure. It can also increase oil consumption. Case in point....and this is not the first time I've seen this......her SUV is now at my shop with the engine on a a stand inside having a complete rebuilt. I just ordered new heads at 700 bucks. Now his story is due to my years and 130k miles of bad service and no name oil I ruined the engine. However, after he got done with all of his majic flushes the SUV burned oil like a freight train and then one day bang and locked up. Upon disassembly the stuff that was broken free clogged the oil passages to one side of the cylinder heads and there was metal to metal transfer and the engine locked up. It also causes leaks around the seals and internally to burn oil to the point the plugs were sooted. Don't do flushes in my opinion. You are asking for trouble. If you feel it's necessary shorten your OCIs but don't mess up your engine by putting majic [censored] in it. The risk of failure is REAL. Also, the human body is the same way. A person can have plaque break free from an arty sidewall and clogged a vein or artery in the body. This is called a STROKE. Same principle. The above is my opinion but it's based on literally 10s of thousands of man hours worked in my service department over a 25 year period. Good luck.
