You know, I've really been struggling with this decision! I don't drive this car very far. My daily "commute" is about 7 miles, round trip. I drive an average of 50-100 miles over the weekend...mainly city driving. I've always changed the oil every 3,000 miles, but this usually amounted to around 5-month OCIs. Considering these factors, would the Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 be better or worse? Would a heavier oil be better for short-trip city driving, averaging 0 to 20 degrees in winter and 80-100 degrees in summer?

Short trip city driving - If you want to try something different, why not try 5w20 this winter?

Save the 5w40 for summertime. It is pretty thick when cold.

Stay with a 5w30. Go with maxlife. No brainer.

Rotella T synthetic could care less. It will be (probably) be a solid 40 weight and have acceptable TBN after a year of such usage. You'll typically be pumping above a 70 weight for most of time you're driving.

If any service was geared to light oil, it's yours.
