Here are a few more Purolator filters that I cut open earlier today. I didn't find any torn pleats this time, but feel free to have a look anyways. There are 2 Purolator Classic L14612s and a PureOne PL14612 from the 1999 Kia Sephia I maintain, and a Classic L14477 from my friend's 2002 Toyota Camry 4-cyl. All had less than 5,000 miles on them.

I'm pretty sure the yellow fleck of paint was from cutting it open.

The Classic L14612 had some pretty ugly pleat spacing near the seam. Large range of date codes, from 2009 to 2012.

The one from 2009 was in use for a long time as the car sat unused for an extended period of time. It sat in my garage for around 6 mos. to a year after removing it from the vehicle as well. I figured I'd cut it open to see what the effect of the age of the filter would be

I agree, the pleat spacing did not look good on that classic.

I just pulled the PureOne our of our PentaStar (cartridge) after 8500 miles. Checked it over really well and it looked great. Not sure if these problems were specific to normal spin ons or what it's all about.

Put a Wix back in because I had it lying around.

Yeah I can't stand that. I won't be buying any Purolator filters for that reason alone.

Thank you for posting this. It would seem that there are some Purolators out there with the torn media, but it is important that people avoid confirmation bias. In other words, not all of those filters have that issue, most likely, only a small percentage. As time goes on, the clear picture will emerge for good or for bad.
