I'm looking for a good extended drain oil for my wife's tahoe. It has the 4.8 vortec and about 30K miles on it. She has been going to Jiffy for the dino oil but I'm going to stick a synthetic in it for her. Here are my issues. She is going to drive 30K miles a year and I've got an 5.4L E350 van and would like to use the same oil if possible. GM recommend 5W30. Would it be Ok to use the 0w20 in her tahoe along with my van OR do I just need to get her the SSO or ASL instead? I'm really new to synthetics so any info is greatly apprecieated.

Do I need to flush the engine out before I put in the amsoil?

Thanks,

Chad

Huh?

These aren't API Certified. The XL-7500 Series is the only API certified. I think you have that backwards Billy.

I have ran 5w20 in my Silverado 5.3 for the past 2 years in the Florida heat & the bad traffic we have here in south Florida. Won't hurt a thing! My truck ran smoother and i got a little better mpg's! I ran M1 5w20 for a little while and Q torque 5w20 for the last 18 months! No need to flush just change your oil & filter. I personaly went by the OLM.I would do some research on the oil you want to use in the UOA section unless you are going to be doing your own UOA's to back up your extended drain intervals! And don't for get to use a quality filter up to the task!

If you are dead set on running the same oil in both, I would go with SSO.

Modulars like 30-weights, GM recommends 30-weights, just use the 30-weight oil. JMHO...

I have a 5.3 in my 03 Yukon. I have wanted to try a 20 weight in there as well but I never have. I also want to try a 40 wt. But anyway I remember seeing an old UOA with someone running redline 5w20 in a suburban I think and it was great! It had the 5.3 in it and it was a great UOA. Anyway I would still say to run a 30 wt in both if you are set on staying with one oil.

Tagging on the others, I would also go 30wt in both. Say a good Mobil 1 (or whatever syn you prefer) 5W/30. Since you have the 4.8 I can tell that's a 2WD Tahoe LS because we don't build many at all with the 4.8. (The 5.3 actually has better MPG.)

If still under warranty, use an API-certified oil so you won't void the warranty, OR have hassles with GM over it.

That truck will have an OLM on it, use Amsoil XL 5W-30 and change it when the OLM says to.

GMboy - Right now my wife is getting a combined 19.3 MPG with that engine. I had the 5.3 in a silverado and didn't do any better. I'm really shocked at how good her MPG's have been.

Thanks for the info guys.

Thats really good mpg. I get 20-21 with a company Tahoe Hybrid. I was referring to the EPA window sticker mpg's where the 5.3 has higher milage and I was always amazed that it did better with fuel while having 30+ more hp.
