I am new on this board, and this has probably been discussed before, but since I missed it, if one were choosing between Amsoil 5w30 and Mobil 1 5w30 for the GM 4.3 V-6, which would be better to go with? I currently use Mobil 1 but was considering trying a run of Amsoil just to see how the engine performed.

a while back when I was looking at what t use, I wasnt impresed by the resuls of M1 in the 4.3
I use M1 in nearly every other car that we own, 9 in all.
Pennzoil Conventional seemed to do best per UOA in that engine, I used that quite a bit. I dont drive my truck a lot anymore, because I have it to ooff road, haul bicycles and as a utility vehicle, not a commuter (which I used to use it for until 2002). I now run schaeffer's 7000 5w30 for year OCIs.

I have the 5.3L version of the GM engine with a ton of miles. I have used both back and forth
I highly recommend the Amsoil for our engines.
Give it a shot, you'll like it.

The 5.3l is nothing like the 4.3l. (5.3l is newer style motor coming into action around 1998-1999. I had a 4.8l in my 2000 Silverado)
The 4.3l is an old sytle 350 with 2 cyl cut off. EXCELLENT motor!

My 1996 C1500 4.3l V6 just passed 240k (I sold it to a friend of mine and its still going well) with no issues.
OCI of 4-5k with 5w30 during the winter months and 10w30 of QS, Valvoline and Pennzoil conventional and AC Delco filters for the time I had it (till around 150k) and Fram filters since.
I tried Mobil 1 back in 1997 and was not impressed with it. Did not give me any more MPG and the cost was not worth it to me.
Big thing on this engine is change the coolant often (no more than 3 years max) do not go 100k miles or 5 years.
If I had to choose from current Mobil 1 or Amsoil I'd go with the Amsoil 5w30 XL oil and change it every 6 months or 7500 miles.

I tried both too in my 5.7(two more cyl's)and WAS NOT impressed
with amsoil,it didn't do anything more then what Mobil 1 did,and Mobil 1 is cheaper and easier to get(wal-mart).
go with Mobil 1 5w30 or Mobil 1 truck and SUV 5w30,great oil's.

I owned a 2004 Silverado w/ 4.3L v-6 for a while & used Motorcraft semisynthetic 5w30 (basically one of the ConocoPhillips blends that is marketed out there); did good with it using 3,500 to 4,000 mile oil change intervals...just an idea

interesting thread. i've been using mobil 1 truck and suv in my 4.3 '03 silverado since i bought it. it now has 56,000 miles on it. i really believe it's a quality product but a little over priced and over rated. i've been thinking about pp or amsoil xl series.
