4.0L I6 Jeep

I have been lurking around this site for a while and finally made an account. I drive a I6 wrangler 4.0, currently has 75k miles on it. I live in Michigan where are summers are hot and winters are cold.
I have tried looking into what oil to use in my jeep
I have read about flat tappet cams and things like that but can't really find an answer.
My question is, what would be the best oil to run in my jeep?
I recently bought some Mobil 1 TDT for its ZDDP levels and easy to find at walmart and meijer and have been using it in my jeep for 1000 miles. Is this oil suitable for my wrangler?
I do alot of stop and go driving, alot of idling, alot of off roading, and some high speed rural road driving. Will this oil be the best way to go?
If this topic has already been discussed then help me find it, i have spent alot of time googling and playing with the search feature here
 
thats is not a bad choice, but IMO you could get as good or "maybe" (don't quote me on that) better for cheaper, by means of Rotella T5 @ 16 bucks a gal at WM.

I use this my 4.0 with a P1 filter in 10-30, although I am a 4k OCI kinda guy, I know I could go longer but i'm ok.
It makes me sleep better at night.

I did just get a VERY good deal on Rotella 3T which is there dinno HDEO and I will run it asell.
 
I ran 0w30 last winter in my 4.0, it seemed to help at startup. The book says 10w30, but after doing much research I'm using 0w30 winter and 5w30 in summer. Just make sure to change the oil. I was experimenting with longer OCIs and developed some lifter tick after a 10k OCI. Can't be sure the OCI caused it as the 4.0 frequently develops the tick at 80-90k.

The oil you've picked is a decent one and should work for you.
 
Never owned one, and probably never will, but this is an engine of legendary toughness.
Run cat urine as oil and it should live a long life.
M1 TDT is probably wasted in this engine, and I don't think that the valve spring pressures are high enough to require a high ZDDP oil.
Use any 10W-30 and that thing will run for a very long time.
 
yeah, 21 bucks a gallon at my local meijer.
Im the best of the best kinda guy and want the best for the jeep, even if that means spending a little extra. Im wanting to be another person who makes his 4.0 go 300k miles and using the correct oil will help me do this.

using full synthetic (i like synthetic for the cold start here in michigan) HDEO oil may be a waste but it helps me feel better when im running 5k RPM launches up sand dunes

then the other day i was using the jeep to drag cut down trees, it was idling in 4-low never going above 5MPH for 3 hours, used half a tank almost. so im looking for something thats going to be above what I need for my jeep. I also do OCIs of 4-5k miles. again just for peace of mind, i enjoy it.
anyone feel rotella t6 would be better? or anything else? Im guessing no?

running the [censored] out of it @5k RPM's is not a good way to get to 300k mi.
$ 16 a gal has nothing to do with quality.
I'm curious as to why mobil tdt is "the best of the best"

haha, well this is true. Its a jeep thing though =P
everyone says its a strong engine, well Im gonna test it. haha

but those are my extremes, i may only do that twice a year.
 
I can't argue the toughness, I see many 4.0's @ 300k over on JF and in my own family.

The oil you're running is a very good choice, my only concern with full syn's in the 4.0 is they are infamous for leaks I wouldn't want to push my luck. But you've made a good choice.

My personal favorite for the 4.0 are HDEO's of the dino persuasion with Rotella being my favorite, and it's readily available in 10w30 also which many of them are not. With the add pack in Rotella I'd not be concerned about leaks with the T5 syn blend version either.

Im not saying M1 tdt is the best oil out there, my question is what is...for my application. Im well aware that if your paying more does not mean your getting a better product.
I must admit im under the impression that M1 tdt and rotella T6 are both top of the line HDEO that are also fully synthetic oils that seem to offer great protection and with Long OCIs at that (atleast in a gas burning engine like mine) so I do Tend to believe it is a top of the line oil but I am obviously second guessing this as why Im on this forum (along with wanting to learn alot more, but the jeep is where i start)trying to get more educated peoples opinions.

so far general consensus is either stick with the TDT or go to rotella T5 10w-30...
 
I run Rotella T6 5W-40 in my 4.0, but M1 TDT is also a very good oil. If you want a top shelf oil and don't mind the price you can always go with Amsoil or Redline.
 
Wal-mart sells M1 TDT for 25 dollars a gallon.
right across nthe street Meijer sells M1 TDT for 21 dollars a gallon.

my Meijer seems to have the best oil prices around.

Jeep 4.0 engines respond very well to 5w40 synthetic HD oils like M1 TDT and Rotella T6. But frankly, they pretty much do fine on anything that meets the minimum specs! They're tough. I've used both M1 TDT and Rotella T6, and the only difference I noticed was a *very* slight increase in rear main seal weep with M1 TDT. Overnight it would leave a drip the size of a half-dollar instead of the size of a nickel.

Another cheaper choice for northern climes would be Rotella T5 (syn blend) in a 10w30 grade for summer. T6 (full syn) is only available in 5w40, which is fine year round pretty much anywhere in the continental US. The 40-weight rating is heavier than the recommended 30-wt rating, but frankly the 4.0 just doesn't notice the difference... its mpg is going to stink no matter what ;-)

Another choice I haven't tried in a 4.0 but might serve well is M1 0w40. I do use it in my muscle-car big-block engines though. Its additive pack is very nearly as strong as TDT, and the 0w40 viscosity would be a benefit in great lakes area winter temps. In my area its just a little harder to find than TDT and T6.
