Whats everybody's thoughts on 3k/3mo oci? My three months is up in the safari but I've only put about 1500 miles on it. Temps over the last month have been above 90 mostly. With today's oil, is 3mo overkill?

In a word- yes. With a good dino oil, you can easily go 5000 miles- or 6 months might be more reasonable for lots of short trips. Sounds like you might be a prime candidate for changing oil twice a year.

I get about 22k out of the amsoil in the truck. I'm too cheap to put it in the safari. I just used cheap conventional. Just wondering if the high temps affect moisture in the oil or something crazy.

For myself...I change the oil ONCE A YEAR. I use Valvoline Synpower and put about 7k to 8k a year. Most of my driving is severe.....stop and go and idling in traffic. However, I get it on the highway for some nice long trips of 1,000 miles 3 or 4 times a year. The full synthetic should be fine for a one year OCI and IMO anymore would just be a waste of money. With Dino oil maybe the 2X a year, as suggested in the posts, would be fine. IMO...In the long run....the pure synthetic at once a year OCI is less money and time wasted rather than the 2X a year with the Dino OCI. What ever works for you is what you should feel comfortable doing..... My next OCI I will be using 3 Quarts of Super Tech Full Synthetic 5w30 from Wally World and 2.5 Quarts of Valvoline 10w30 Synpower with a Fram Tough Guard Oil Filter. My usual 4-5 ounces of TufOil will boost up the Moly and additive mix.

I have been changing mine at 5K miles. You may want to convert to a High Mileage oil instead of a Full Synthetic. With 171K, I don't see the benefit of a Full Synthetic if you didn't use it before.

All the manufactuers today are going to longer drain interval, either 5K,7500,10K or more. Today's oil is made better than ever before and many are going to Full Syn as factory fill (i.e. 0W-20), so I think the 3K/3months is going away. Even Pennzoil changed their oil warranty to state every 4K miles.

I drive only 4000 miles a year of just back and forth to school and work, about 5 miles each way in stop and go traffic. I put in Pennzoil Platinum last November and plan to just change it yearly. FWIW my oil life indicator still shows about 50%.

Because I have so many qts of oil(dino/syn), I make my own blend using 2qts syn w/ 3qts dino, all oils being held in high reguard here at BITOG. 2 vehicles(3 if counting the one we store winters) but, both being used only around town with occassional long trips. Both only doing 6K/year. OCI's, 2X/year on each(6mo/3k) changing the filter every other OCI.

I could use conventional with my driving habits and still be fine. I use synthetic for piece of mind i guess. Six months between 5 and 6K. The Jetta every 4 months between 4 and 5K.
