My report: This sample was taken during a rather harsh winter, during which my block heater quit working. I'm assuming some of the higher wear metals are due to this.

Enjoy!

Edit: I'm working on trying to get the image up...

Even with the winter starts w/o a block heater, that is some NASTY wear from 3k on M1 0W-40...you've got severe, severe piston wear with that Aluminum number. I thought 0W-40 M1 would do better than that in winter conditions...guess not!

Good luck!

Looks like you had a ton of idling on that engine with ultra cold starts. Your fuel is high, you've got alot of manganese in there, your flashpoint is depressed, and the wear metals are completely out of whack for 3000 miles on that engine.

But hey, congratulations, your engine will still last 200,000 miles :)

I think the oil is too thin for that engine. Run what the manufacturer says. What would that be a 5w-30?

**I hate how those GM engines spit out copper.

A 40 weight oil is thicker than a 30 weight oil. The 0 cold weight is good for winter. Does the car have a oil cooler? Does the car have piston slap? Does it consume oil?

You know for a FACT its wear eh? It couldn't be cleaning/loosening deposits containing metal particles in the engine, and subsequently letting them loose in the oil?

I don't think much can be drawn from this, if anything.

No piston slap and no oil consumption as far as I'm aware. I'll check the oil level more often though to make sure.

Thanks for the input so far, it's appreciated.

I'd ditch the 0W40 for the winter time and try a 0W30 and see if anything changes. If you're not racing the car I would even consider the 0W30 now.

GC 0w30 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you in F body world, you should already knew that.

Then I'd give a 30 wt oil a try and see if things improve, do the UOA after the second run of the 30 wt oil. JMO
