$3.99 oil drain plug vs $16+ oil drain plug

I check my oil drain plug, and seem like the seal is have small leak, and the bolt is look like pretty worm out, im affaird it will get strip. So im plan to buy a new plug,

first plug is regular plug cost 4 dollar at advance auto part
second plug, order online, I think it caller " gold plug " it had build in magnet.

I dont mind spend $20 for high quality plug, any suggestion ? thank you.

Interesting, I bought a 'gold exterior' drain plug Beck Arnley replacement for the Civic last oil change when my original(assumed original

) had the threads start degrading. I just hope the oil pan's threads aren't doing the same, or it's Fumoto valve for me!
 
Personally, I'd go with the basic plug. If you really want a magnet you could get a filter magnet that goes on your oil filter.

how u like the Fumoto , few year back I alway want one of these, but my car was too low, now im doing some off road im affaid something hit the level and drain my oil out.
 
Personally, I don't think the magnet and what it does is worth the extra $16. Think cost/benefit.

As far as the soft metal comment... I say that's a good design feature, because I'd rather strip the bolt than the oil pan threads.

That's what gets me about some posters on this board. A user asks a question, which is not a dumb question, and gets remarks like that. Only dumb question is the one that's not asked.

To the OP....I would go with OEM first.
 
after did some research, and how my OCI which is every 6 month. so plain old cheap oem plug is all I need. If I do prequent oil change or car too low or need jack the car up, then I would get quick drain plug, but since my truck is tall enought, I dont have to jack the truck up, and easy to reach the drain plug,

and most important, that I dont have to worried, if some one drain my oil out or got it knock off while off road. so OEM cheap plug is all I need.

There may be "no such thing as a dumb question" but some are pretty close to nothing more than plain old fashioned common sense. This thread is one of them.

I agree with Kestas, and the idea of the softer metal yielding(wearing out) compared to the threads on the pan. I'd get it for that if you think the threads are degrading on the oil pan itself or the replacement bolt starts looks bad after a couple uses. I'd insert and tighten, then remove and see what it looks like.

If the threads look horrible look into a Fumoto valve. There is a way to make sure it's locked in the 'closed' position if there is a fear of drain out. I can't recall right now, but I believe someone had the valve open on them that posted here but the way things happened, it didn't do any harm that time. Someone else had chimed in the way they 'fasten' the valve once closed, but I can't recall off-hand.

I do not have a Fumoto, but was referencing it as my option if the replacement drain plug I bought(seen here: pic link ) starts degrading and I realize the pan's threads are going.

Not to hijack, but I seem to recall people wondering how well the Fumotos drain compared to removing a conventional plug. I have a bit of an answer today, having installed one in my G37. I took out the original drain plug and let the oil drain until it was just dripping every few seconds. I installed the Fumoto, then opened the valve. It still dripped every few seconds, so it must not have a huge effect on how much drains.
 
Gravity, a hole, and it's relative position below the pressure of the fluid is like pulling the plug on a bath tub full of water or the kitchen sink: It will drain.
