I have the opportunity to purchase a lightly used Dakota PU that has a 3.7 L Dodge engine. What can you tell me about this engine?

Good?
Bad?

Indifferent?

Thanks,

Friend has one.

Eats gas like a 6L V8.

Noisy like crazy.

Has go when you need it.

Can take a beating and keep on ticking (based on his in-frequent OCI's and lead-foot!

I have it in a Jeep Liberty and I'm pleased with it. Zero problems so far. I was always a Ford fan, not much of a Chrysler person. The 3.7L is changing my mind. If you're looking for good MPG's, well that's another story.

I have a 07 Dakota with that motor. Im actually a bit disappointed with the 3.7 liter. It is a bit underpowered but I can deal with that. The problem is that its underpowered and I only get 15 MPG no matter where or how I drive. It eats gas like an old 5.0 liter Ford F 150 I had. I have it with the manual 6 speed Getrag transmission. I hear people complaining about the noise of the motor but I have no issue with that. That might be a problem when its mated with an automatic transmission but I also have hearing problems so maybe its just me. I believe it is a much more reliable motor than some of the earlier chrysler motors but only time will tell. Toyota has a very nice 4.0 liter V6 but its $10,000 more for that truck. Just the MPG is really eating me up on this Dakota as I expected a little better for a V6.

ALL the current sixes are notoriously bad at hogging the gas. The TRD Tacoma I had as a lender... Let's just say in the three days I had it, it consumed what the Yaris does in two to three weeks.

I lease a 2008 Jeep Liberty with that aforementioned 3.7l engine.

Pros: I get to change the oil in it myself :D

Cons: Its noisy, I drive like a grandfather with a fragile foot and I get 13mpg - The Envoy I traded in got better mpgs and I could actually tow with that... Its underpowered and Chrysler did a horrific job with the throttle by wire because there is a 1-2 second delay from when you press the gas until the engine responds.. not the 3.7 at fault but the electronics that go with it.

I was very surprised how noisy the engine is. By noisy I mean at idle it ticks and sounds very "sloppy". When you lay into the gas, it sounds like an airplane engine under the hood (read: no clutch fan on the 3.7 - elec. fans) but you are getting the power of a go-kart.

False. The 3.7 is a V6 version of the 4.7 V8, which was designed by Chrysler before the Daimler takeover.

We have an 06 Liberty with 75k miles, and the 3.7 seems to be doing very well. No, MPG isn't great, but I would think that has more to do with the weight/aerodynamics of the Libby than anything with the engine itself.

I would have it checked out. Seriously.

When we were on vacation, we rented an 08 Libby. Had it for two weeks, and drove from Orlando to Myrtle Beach and back. It consistently returned 21-22 mpg the whole time. I drove fairly conservatively, but did not make an extra effort to baby it. I had no complaints about the power or shift feel, either.

If yours is half as bad as it sounds by your description, something is wrong.

I agree, have it checked out. We're getting about 19 mpg mixed driving and the engine is surprisingly quiet, it has enough power for my needs.

False...

The 3.7 Design was done by Daimler before the announced take-over. The take-over was already in the works 3 years before the announcement to the public...

Dad worked for Chrysler, and so I know this first hand...

The rumor that refuses to die...

Nothing German about the 4.7/3.7, despite what the idiot editorial staff of a national car magazine said and everyone keeps repeating. They were in design at JTE (Jeep/Truck engineering, the combined resources of the old AMC and Chrysler engine groups) well before the takeover. Everyone thinks they're German because they appeared early in the year of the takeover, but it takes a several YEARS to get an engine from the drawing board to production, so it could not POSSIBLY have had a Daimler influence. Apart from that, Daimler never actually stuck their nose into Chrysler engine design much. The most direct involvement was in the 5-speed automatic initially used in the LX cars (300/Charger/Magnum) and also the front suspension geometry of those cars. And even that 5-speed has largely been replaced more and more by the in-house 545RFE with the Diamler-derived W5A580 being used less and less (mostly in SRT-8s, it is a very good tranny).

The Toyota 3.0 is in a league of its own in that respect. On the 4x4 forums I haunt its often referred to as having "all the power of a 4-cylinder and all the economy of a v8."

But its very tough which is why its still around... nowhere near the league of a Jeep 4.0 IMO... but then I'm biased :-)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_PowerTech_engine

in 1999 the 8 cylinder version of this engine was on the best 10 designs list. wikipedia refers to it as a semi-hemi. this line is used in dodge trucks, and no one is saying anything bad about it.
I have an 08 Dakota with the 3.7 and automatic. They must be good, because you can get a lifetime powertrain warranty, for the original owner.

The 3.7 is nothing more than a 4.7 less two cylinders. It uses a polyspherical combustion chamber. In this particular execution it is essentially a hemispherical combustion chamber with one flat bulkhead side. Some referred to this design as a "semi-hemi."

Easiest V-configuration engine for spark plug changing! The plugs are on the top side of the heads, not on the low sides pointing towards the ground and surrounded by exhaust manifolds.

Combine coil on plug ignition with a single screw anchoring each coil, and plug changing is almost as easy as Saab's In-Line four!

Are your Liberties 4 wheel drive as well?

I will bring it in soon because the back window has leaked since it was new and 1/2 of the rear defrost grid doesnt work. The radio goes out about once a week - totally dead - no clock or anything and comes back on like nothing ever happened. Its a lease, and Im almost at the 1/2 way mark until it goes back so Im counting down the months. Going to either lease/buy a Ford next - a company where at least their quality ratings reflect their work

(Mind you I came from a Chrysler family, but always liked GM products)

I know its going to come up so let me come clean now. Certainly somebody is going to say "WELL YOU SHOULDVE THOUGHT ABOUT THE MPG's & POWER BEFORE YOU BOUGHT IT!"

Im helping a family member out who lost their job and couldnt afford the lease payment, yes its a lease. 36 months, of which I have 19 months left. I sold my 02 Envoy SLT to drive this PIG around until the lease is up. Trust me, I wouldnt have picked the Liberty out for my personal vehicle. Totally a good samaritan move on my part. I miss my Envoy every single living day....

With that being said, there are some nice points to the 3.7l engine like at one point it did employ somebody to put it together. Other than that, I would think the 4.0L inline six was un-arguably the best engine Jeep ever put into their smaller SUVs. I had a 1999/2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport as a rental once, with the 4.0 I6 and WOW, that engine was very torquey. Loved it.

Hey...The engine you speak of was designed by Mr.Lutz of Chrysler, after he was fired by General Motors. Mr. Lutz (Known as Klutz, by his friends)did a "great job" on that "fine engine", then he returned to General Motors after Chrysler was bought out by Daimler Benz. "A Merger of Equals." Now he is part of the team that is running GM into the ground.....Bankruptcy anyone?
