3.0 Mercruiser filter drains back

After sitting overnight, or longer, 3.0 mercruiser will drain oil back out of the oil filter. Takes several seconds of cranking the motor over with kill switch on before oil pressure come up on a gauge. Filter has anti drain back valve on it.
Does anyone else noticed similar "problem" ?

I never heard of leaving the Kill switch on while cranking the engine to watch oil pressure come up.

How long does it take for oil pressure to come up without using the Kill-switch?

To me, it only makes sense once you start an engine its turning at least 1000 RPMs and the oil pressure will come right up versus a starter turning the engine at 1/10 that RPM.

I think the only problem might be turning over your engine, using the starter and a kill switch painfully delaying the flow of oil.

Just my thoughts. I have had a fair amount of MerCruiser 3.0 and the very similar almost exact Volvo penta 3.0.
I wonder if you’re overthinking it?

The reason I started it doing it this way is because it took three to four seconds for pressure to come up with the engine running.
I should probably mention that I'm running fram 3506. Its a bit larger then original one.

Some of the Frams are having an issue with a leaky ADBV. You could try replacing it with something like a CarQuest Premium 85042 or Microgard Select 51042 and see if it remains an issue. If so, I would love to see a C&P of the Fram and how wavy the leaf spring is.

Great suggestion, I'll get another filter and see if that helps. And I'll try to do the C&P and post a link to this thread.
Thanks!

I've only used purolator's on mine. I have to crank it a few times to get the fuel pressure up, still a mechanical pump, and by that time, oil is moving around. Those engines are tough, I wouldn't sweat it.

Although the 3.0 Merc that I once owned was probably an older version, the oil filter mounted on the starboard side of the block. The pad pitched so that the filter always had oil. I’m sure a leaky drain back could allow some to drain back but doubtful the filter would be empty. Does yours have a remote mount where the filter is mounted thread-open side down?

Donald I have not had the time to fool with it yet. No its screws on to the block, almost sideways.

No its on the side of the block. I'll get around to changing oil/filter and post pictures of the filter.

I told you guys wrong, I had fram gx5 in there. Took it off this morning and replaced with ph30. Didn’t realize that ph doesn’t have anti drain back on it.

Any way, when taking gx5 off there was no oil that leaked out. That would explain why it took so long to get oil pressure up.

I’ll post pictures of cut open little later.
