You guys like looking at things with their tops off, especially engines. I just took off the valve cover this morning to see if the intake or exhaust flange bolts in my 2zz were broken (original owner said he had never changed it). To my delight, they weren't! (at 102k, they were supposed to be broken 2-3 times over). Also, to my pleasure, the engine is sparkling! Good job previous owner guy.

these are the bolts that break off and cause lift to fail

Actually, when I picked it up in new brunswick to drive back to Philly, I noticed it was almost a quart low. All I had was MMO. Probably drove 20 or so miles with a pint of mmo before changing the oil. This was very recent.

Also, there seems to be a red powdery residue all over the ignition coils.

Just a little rust pulled out of the air, nothing to worry about. Iron and magnets and all that...

Good question. I had some of that in my coils when I replaced them. They still worked but were on borrowed time (a batch of defective ones in RAV4). I did some searches on it and it looked like you can see that when isolation fails in HV circuits IIRC.

Seems much more red than what rust looks like, it looks like a deep cherry koolaid powder. I've read that red might mean too much fuel injector cleaners.
