I replaced my valve cover gasket today. I took some pics just for posterity. How does it look? Looks good to me, clean anyway :)

What kind of oil??? How many miles??? Doesn't look too bad to me. There will be comments about the "varnish" staining. I.E. the gold color.

It didn't look quite that gold in person. I think that's partially from the sunlight (late afternoon.) I just turned over 200k. Lot's of different brands of oil, but all 5w-20 synthetic.

lil bit of varnish smarnish never hurt a motor, looks good to me. No sludge and on excessive cam wear.

I'd just use a ck rated diesel oil if you were concerned. Some home depots have gtx diesel for $10-11 a gallon which is the cheapest for a pure ck.

Isn't CK-4 diesel also SN? Is it for it's cleaning ability that you recommend it? I'm not really worried about it, but that's interesting.

hey Jonas.. Did you notice that the old gasket was cracking/brittle? Was yours leaking?
It was leaking a little around one of the spark plug wells. It was also split in one spot. It looked brand new, I just think it was installed improperly. My guess is that it shifted or fell out a little when putting the cover back on. I added a few dots of RTV to make sure that didn't happen.

Thanks for the info! Mine is original and leaking on my scion tc (on an edge) and have to get it fixed so wondered how yours was. Good idea about some RTV to keep the gasket "stuck" in the grooves when putting the cover back on. (y)

Some but not all but rotella t4 and GTX diesel are pure CK rated and have over 2, 000ppm of calcium. I don't think an engine flush is necessary.

Light colored varnish is nothing, some engines are worse than others, the straight 6 in my Trailblazer is infamous for getting super varnished up the timing cover up to the vent on the top of the valve cover, and that doesn't affect anything, a little light gold varnish on a 10+ year old car isn't anything to worry about.

Cams look quite decent to me....

Not too shabby... I have a 98 Camry with the same motor... Great running car. Got it with only 66k miles on it. Now at 190k miles.

Hey captain. Think you have different 4 cylinder as the 2AZ-FE engine didn’t come out until 2000
