I just bought a new Ferris ZTR with a Briggs PXi2500 25hp 724cc engine.
The dealer told me just run it from the get-go at full throttle and don't worry about break-in.

Any other thoughts?

When I bought my Ferris, the dealer told me to run the motor for 1 hour, changing the RPM frequently, but with no load. Change the oil, with conventional, then run it under light load for 4 hours and change the oil with conventional again at the 5 hour mark. Next interval was 25 hours and switched to synthetic at that point. I have 100 hours on my Ferris with the Briggs Commercial Turf and it has been amazing. I’ve been running 15W-50 since the 25 hour mark.

I typically change out the factory oil on OPE between 5 - 8 hours. Depending upon the application I prefer either 10w-30 or 15w-40 synthetics. For your application I would use a 15w-40 synthetic since you are unlikely to start or run the machine below 50F but might run it above 90F if you have a high heat tolerance. Personally I avoid that over 90F scenario by mowing early in the morning or around dusk. I've been running 15w-40 RT6 in my Briggs V-Twin for several years now with no complaints.

Commercial users don’t do anything other than run them from day one and get thousands of hours out of them. You’ll be fine whatever you do but I’d probably change the oil after an hour or two. Does this have the 5 quart oil system like my Ferris does?

Last summer I ran Kirkland 5-30 in mine. I expected it to use some oil but it didn't.

Thanks guys. It's so cold and wet here in Indiana here it's gonna be a while until I can get it out of the garage LOL.

I more or less second all the above answers, but will add that when I got my 25 Briggs Commercial Turf, I changed at .5, then 1hr and 5hrs and was glad that I did as there was lots of shiny stuff in the oil. After the 3rd change it looked relatively clear, so I just do annual changes now.

All of these complicated rpm / hours matrix's are silly . Mow the lawn . Change the oil with whatever you plan to run . Change again after a couple of hours . Don't overthink it .

The break in procedure on the harbour freight engines is to run them for an hour WOT without a load and then dump the oil afterwards. I'd probably do that
