The issue is how the current used truck market is priced. Trucks don't depreciate nearly as quick as they used to.

As an example, trucks optioned like the OP wanted (4x4, supercrew) on the local volume leaders lot with 50-70k on them are priced between 23 (multi accident vehicle I might add) and 29k. They are selling new 2014 trucks in XLT trim for $32k. Throw in nearly 0% financing, and to me it becomes a no brainer to go new. And I've never bought a new truck in my life - they've all been used with between 70 and 105,000 miles.

I got you on this- but as I said, I got a 2005 F250 super cab 4x4 early this year with 54K on it for $15,500. I know it wasnt a crew cab, but my point is that great deals are absolutely out there. You have to be patient and look around quite a bit. I looked at quite a few trucks. I just saw one that if it was available at the time I would have snapped up, 1999 supercab F250, lariat, 4x4 V10- absolutely loaded just over 100k. I dont really sweat mileage too much either. Brakes are easy to do and cheap if you do it yourself, so is catching up on services (diffs, T-case, trans, etc). Either buy a truck with no systemic problems or get familiar and accept risk and understand how to mitigate known issues (Titan rear diffs, on my truck sparkplugs, etc) and you can get a smoking deal.

Trucks like the make me regret spending 15.5K on mine....

That looks nice, but...

-suicide rear doors. Ok, maybe not suicide but to get in the back you open both doors.
-in the event of a T-bone, is this as safe as something with a pillar between doors? I guess it sits up high enough, but I'm unsure as to vehicle safety.
-no center seat up front, no seating for 6 (uncomfortable) people
-I didn't see a center 3pt harness in the back, so this is really only seating for 4 people
-older 4spd auto. Probably stupid reliable, but an mpg penalty
-V10 and towing gears, and again mpg penalty. Unless if primarily used as, well, a truck.
-3/4 ton, so expensive tires too, and a rough ride.

I didn't see a price on it, but unless if it's just for towing and lightly driven otherwise, I'm not usre I'd beat myself up over it.

Err, wait, I see an F250 in your sig line. I guess for those of us looking for half-tons, this isn't our cup of tea. For you, ok I could see a bit of the regret. That does look like it has lots of life left.

3/4 ton trucks are not all that different to live with than a 1/2 ton, especially with the obesity problem many newer 1/2 tons have. Fuel economy of the 6.8L in this truck is worse than say a 3.6 Ram, but isn't significantly worse than V8 1/2 tons of its era. Probably a 14 MPG truck.

In the event of a t-bone, most vehicles will end up under this truck.

And plenty of Super Duties were built with front bench seats that are wider than any in a half ton, and crew cabs. No mini-bed though, 6.5' is as short as they get. Lap belts don't bother me, especially in a truck this size, but I guess that could be an issue for some. I would guess that dealer is probably going to sell that truck for around $10,000 since it's a gas engine (7.3 would almost double it's value, if not double it). Try finding a $10,000 truck with 6 3 point belts.

That truck has 16" wheels. Even LT tires for it are probably the same price or cheaper than tires for a late model 1/2 ton, especially those with 20"-22" donk wheels.

I'd buy it. That's a great looking truck. No ridiculous styling, and it will have parts availability probably forever.

My only concern would be the missing 4x4 decals on the bed...might have been wrecked. Or maybe someone just didn't like them, but from the factory it would have had a 4X4 decal on each bedside.

Not always...they could be deleted. Now that I think on it, I recall seeing more than a few 1999 SDs without them.

Crew cabs price out with over a $2000 premium to Supercabs here. They are the in demand truck, and they are priced accordingly. Some of the older 3/4 ton trucks with gas engines (particularly the 5.4) can be found relatively cheap, but that's if you want or need a 3/4 ton. I don't need a 3/4 ton, nor do I want to put up with the ride (I drive them at work).

Looking at that 99, I forget that things don't rust out in other parts of the country. My '99 F150 was looking starting to look like swiss cheese when I sold it. That was four years ago... (and also nearly 200,000 miles, so it did have some road wear...)

Anyone else note that rear bumper is bent down? Wonder what else is hidden in the rear?

Yeah, my 05 has the 5.4, its the 300hp 3V, and it does have the torq-shift, but I would sure appreciate the extra grunt from that V10! I get about 14-16mpg with my 250. My last 1/2 ton was a 2000 F150 with the 4.2 V6 and 4.56-1 gears (I swapped em) got about 18-20mpg on the highway. I really like 3/4 tons, I think with a sway bar in the back and a set of 4.56 gears mine would be close to perfect.
Correct- they arent the best family vehicles, on mine the console folds and someone can sit in the middle. As far as collisions go, I dont worry about them one bit. I had a Saturn SUV rear end me- it now needs a new front end, the 250 had a rub on the bumper. Get under a 3/4 ton or 1 ton some time (same frames, minor spring and axle differences- specifically spline count and spring spacers in the fords). The frames are absolutely robust! These things will take a tremendous lick, plus they weight 6000lbs plus. I got the 5.4 because the truck was a 4x4 super cab 3/4 ton, had low miles and was cheap. It will pull 9,700lbs I believe, which many 1/2 tons are now pulling, or close to it. However, the difference between pulling with a half ton and a 3/4 ton is absolutely night and day. If you are serious about pulling stuff, the 3/4 ton is a REALLY good thing, and since I am not a diesel guy, the V10 would be Nirvana! (P.S.), he is asking $8900 on the truck!

Valid point, though I peeled mine immediately upon purchase.

My buddy bought a 1998 F150 Lariat brand new. No decals. He added them later.

Go new.

Good used vehicles are overpriced.

Two year old trucks can be priced higher than new ones around here.

Pick a nice RAM with the Hemi and little else and you'll not damage your budget excessively.

You'll thank me later.
