My daughter has a 2024 Mazda CX-50 with a naturally aspirated SKYACTIV®-G 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with cylinder deactivation and is a GDI engine. The vehicle is driven fairly hard with a 70/30 mix of city / highway driving. I was considering using Mobil 1 0W20 ESP X2 oil in it along with the Mazda oil filter. What would be the consensus of using the ESP oil? My main interest in this oil is retention of viscosity as I have no idea of fuel dilution with this powertrain. Car is only 6 weeks old.

Thanks!

Have you went through Mobil's oil suggestion on their website? Let us know what it shows?

I stuck with the Mazda 0W20 in my 2013 Mazda CX5 (2.0L) during the decade I owned it. It has increased Molybdenum which helps with NOACK in GDI engines.

If you are worried about fuel dilution nothing helps more than increasing the OCI frequency.
except maybe going up a grade.
Are you going to be doing the oil changes on it?

FWIW GDI doesnt seem to be as bad as TGDI engines for fuel dilution and some are much worse than others.

The cx-50 is a nice ride but it wasn't for me after actually driving it. Which was back to back with the vehicle I bought (combined dealer)

No problem with fuel dilution. My 2018 CX-5 only goes 5K miles/year but 90% short trips. I change twice a year. Currently PUP but I’ve used Mobil 1 AFE, Schaefer’s, Valvoline, Citgo, and Zepro, Idemitsu’s brand no longer available. I get oil filters from the dealer. Next 2 changes will be PUP. Gift card deal. Does the manual still recommend Castrol?

There is a lot of documentation about the Mazda 2.5 engine not being picky about oil. It's very common to bump up the viscosity to a xW-30 in these, but if it is brand new and you want to maintain the warranty, most don't make that change until the warranty expires.

Any oil, including the Mobil 1 you mentioned will do just fine in this engine. The Mazda filter will work fine, premium guard is another popular pick no matter what the vehicle is.

I run Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30 in my 2016 CX-5. I do mostly short trips, and change when the car's Oil Life Monitor tells me to.

The 2.5 engines seem to dilute the oil with fuel, due to direct fuel injection, so you need to keep that in mind for more frequent oil changes.

I'll be using QS Euro LX 0w-30 (C3/C2, VW 504/507) oil in an extended fam member's '22 CX-30 with NA 2.5 engine this weekend.
And I'm gonna advise him to keep using VW 504/507 oil with OCIs of 8k km or 5k miles (severe sched). Owner's manual says to use 0w-20 in Canada in USA and 5w-30 elsewhere. The car will get synth 75w-90 in TX case and diff as opposed to 'recommended' 75w-85 too.
ATF D/R will be with original Mazda FZ due to warranty reasons, as well as original Mazda engine oil filter.

Welcome fellow CX-50 owner :) (my thread might have some good info I have got some good help in it)

They seem to have about 3 factory filters for this. If staying factory try to find the ROKI (harder to find, think you have to get it online). I was not impressed with the value filter from the dealer.

I think having a reasonable OCI is the best option. I'm trying out the Valvoline Advanced protection for my first break in oil change.

Even at 658 miles I could smell gas in the oil (Short trips here mainly). I'm not used to GDI (this is the first one) and really wished they made more cars without GDI for this one reason.

I'm going to go with a shorter OCI, and when outside the warranty I might do 5-30 (manual says 5-30 everywhere minus USA/CA).

These engines aren't picky at all. I put 72,000 miles on my Mazda6 with the same powerplant in it, and it continued to be reliable and happy until I was t-boned by a pickup truck.

I used 0-20 and whatever oil filter fit on the engine. Don't overthink it too much.

2024 models do not have cylinder deactivation. Fuel dilution does occur with these engines. Any API SP 0/5w-30 is a good choice.

My 2024 CX-5 DOES have it, unfortunately.

Don't see the CX-50 in this, but I'm worried about it, as my car applies (checked my VIN.)

I used Royal Purple 75w90 in the rear differential of our 2021 CX-30 with good results but good luck changing the front transfer
case fluid as the fill port is blocked by a bracket. People on the CX-30 forum have grind down the bracket to access the fill hole but I
haven't yet @ 60K. I hope to do it in the future but I don't always have access to the vehicle long enough (daughters car).

I didn't bother with TX case, not my car, didn't want to bugger anything up for the owner, it's still under warranty too.
