With regard to the fatal accident rate: It is interesting to note just how much worse some vehicles are when compared to others. I can see how 'vette or 911 owners can push the limits and crash. But the others may highlight vehicle or size/strength deficiencies, such as the Mitsubishi Mirage being near the top of the list. Despite the claim that these vehicles get good government safety ratings.

It would be nice to have a complete list to see where my choices lie. My Jag F-Type may be in the same category as a Mustang or 'Vette. Or maybe not. I don't race anybody with it.

But a Hyundai Venue topping the list at 4.9x worse than average and 6.3x worse than other SUV's, yikes.

Driver behaviour definitely a contribution to fatal accidents. Smallest cars though are at a disadvantage from the rest of the crowd. Stupid drivers are out there so we must learn what gives us an advantage out here.

In a collision between 2 cars of the same rating, the lighter weighing vehicle will be worse off.

In a collision between a car and a truck or SUV (even of the same weight and rating) the lower vehicle will be worse off.

Maybe the issue is with the bigger vehicles.....

It’s worth noting that size has a lot to do with perceived safety against death.

This vehicle is the safest on the road despite having absolutely no safety equipment and a bare metal interior. One was hit by a train and all survived. Others have hit large UIDs with NO ARMOR and all survived.

The Mirage is the lightest vehicle on the road and passes with flying colors in single vehicle accidents and against other cars in its weight class. It also is safer “by death rate” than about 90% of cars made in the 90’s and is involved in fewer “total loss” accidents per capita and fewer accidents per capita in general compared to other cars on the road.

So fewer accidents but more deadly if we only compare new cars ignoring the 80’s , 90’s and early 2k junk bouncing around everywhere.

Have you ever noticed who drives them and how?

CRVs are the K car every Tom **** Harry and little 15 year old sally drive. Load em up with a cab full of distracted teens and that ruins the statistics for a year in one go. Virtually every CRV fatal crash has 3 or more involved.

Most around here are missing most of the body panels and are dented up

I find it odd though that they were able to get to 23 worst when a ton of Subarus, Nissans, Hondas all have similarly bad stats that are just a fraction off.

Unpopular opinion here but a big contributor is the unique culture of owning gratuitously large pickups.

I just don't see the typical CRV pilots driving like idiots or misbehaving. But these fatality statistics don't exist in a vacuum. As I mentioned above, I suspect some form of vehicle deficiency. Or a combination of factors, such as distractions, vehicle dynamics, stability systems like the ones in older Mustangs that end up causing spinouts. That kind of thing.
 
I was wondering why the Mirage seems to be listed twice. Apparently one is a sedan, the other a hatch?

I wonder how that would change the ratings if they were included together.

No, this does not correlate. This is about new cars and the CR-V hybrid has only been out since 2020 anyway. The typical driver is a middle aged mother of 2.

The people your describing are driving a 15 year old CR-v handed down by said mother. Or perhaps a 15 year old civic/camry or Kia soul.

Also, why the hybrid - why not the ICE model also - its not even on the list?

Very strange indeed.

The non-hybrid CRV 2017 has been on that list in the past as has the Highlander and Outlander.

CRVs are in a TON of non-fatal accidents and are everywhere , They tend to be one of the few vehicles on the road with an average occupancy above 1.x

It’s just inevitable that fatalities are higher given the use and the immense number on the road.
 
I'm surprised to see any Hyundai vehicles in that list. My son rolled my wifes 2012 Hyundai Santa fe 3-4 times. All airbags went off and he kicked out windshield and walked away with just a small scratch on his hand. If you saw the car, you wouldn't believe me. So, I really feel Hyundai is on their game with at least the Santa Fe's. My son owes his life to that.

The thing is like mentioned, most cars are insanely safe these days. They lose the war sometimes with larger vehicles. Some of these cars are IIHS top safety picks on this list.


Let's not forget Elon Musk saying "if you get in a crash and you're driving a Cybertruck, you will win." I find that sickening.

Yeah, true.

I found Lee Iococca's response to the Ford Pintos exploding gas tanks even worse. He said it was cheaper to pay the wrongful death suits than to fix the issue.

Reality is, those big whigs are all the same. It's about the $$$$....

You're not wrong there. Our lives are all just worth a rounding error on some of these company's balance sheets with opinions like that. I forgot about the Iococca line.

Again, I don't recall any other mid-size SUV's on last years list. Nor are there any on this years list. Not even the regular CR-V. I doubt there is a statistical difference between the average number of occupants in a ICE vs Hybrid CR-V, but maybe there is?

The survey is based on miles, so the number on the road should be averaged out. And the CR-V hybrid is way down the list of qty even if it didn't, well below the Rav4, Rav4 hybrid, etc.

Still something odd about that one that can't be easily explained away.
