welp today was a great day , drove into work (19kms of highway) came to a stop a the only red light. oil pressure warning came on engine was noisy and slightly squeaking. didnt hear a sound while driving with the radio off. shut the engine off , waited for light to change then drove to the other side of the intersection to check the oil. decided to drive the 500ft to work as whatever damage is already done , verified no pressure with a manual gauge.

oils full and black as can be , only 800kms on this change of 0w20 mobil with a baldwin bt223. guess its time to stick a fork in it , shes toast.

happy monday

That sucks to hear. I wonder what failed. Could the chain that drives the pump have failed? that's all I can think of. I love simple gerotor pumps.

Can you give us some History on this car, like when you bought it and how many miles it had on it when you purchased it? How many miles did you put on this vehicle?
bought it 6 months ago with 89kms on it. no history at all she now has 98kms. engine looks spotless down the oil fill , but the oil had always been jet black before and after all 3 oil changes ive done.

Jet black as in on a paper towel or dip stick? if so that's bad. I've never had oil look pure black on a the dip stick or paper towel only dark brown at most.

Bought from a wholesaler? Methinks this may be related to the engine failure, but then again, it could be 100% random failure. But it sucks no matter what.

Oil is black? That seems off, but I'm not familiar with this engine, but if the prior owner wasn't on top of things, maybe your oil changes are now cleaning up things. Err, were cleaning things, if it was getting noisy it could be toast.

Time to slice the oil filter open while shopping for used engines. This is a fairly common engine, no?

Bummer on the short lifespan of the engine. I think this has a timing belt but the oil pump is still a chain. Perhaps that chain failed, for some random reason, that's all I can think of.

hard to see but its clean as can be.

it is what it is. i suspect oil pump failure as it happened suddenly. never used oil or made any noise prior to this event.

Well bummer. I had a '21 Jetta and one of my favorite parts of the car was that fun little 1.4. I think there are some very high mileage examples running around at this point.

Do update if you confirm the cause.

our oil change shop messed up on our 24 VW GTi a couple months back, the car lost all oil as the filter o-ring was damaged on installation by some goon at the change shop. The only good thing was that the engine shut itself down when oil pressure got low, I suspect the car has a safety circuit to do that before the damage gets real bad. I never seen the oil pressure light come on, as the motor just shutdown. The car has driven fine ever since.

no oil shutdown on this one. starts and runs as if theres no issue , outside of the obvious knocking and ticking.

Those pics look terrible.
I wouldn't doubt the engine had skipped a few oil change intervals which is how it ended up with a wholesaler.
Sorry for your loss, I'm sure there's plenty of used engines (in better shape) available.
Yes-it wasn't there by accident. Would like to know how much the OP "saved" buying it from there..............
