I just got my results for my oil analysis from blackstone labs for my 2021 5.7 Hemi with 57,000 miles. I’ve sent my oil to them over the last few years and notice a slight creep up in manganese with this time it being at 12. They didn’t show any concern in the comments but should I be? I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w20 and Mopar filter. Religiously change oil at 5,000 or slightly over. Use no octane booster and always use top tier 89 octane gas.

My manganese on the initial UOA was 1. The next it was 8 and the most recent was back to 1. (2021 Ram 5.7)

Just for reference I run 7500oci and our iron averages are essentially identical per 1000 miles.

2019 5.7 here, my manganese level has never been more than 2 with 10,000 intervals.

My iron has been 1.7 since making the switch to HPL products, my copper floats in the 3.0 to 4.5ppm/1000. I am planning an analysis this week which will be at about 8500 miles, not changing yet. Deciding to extend past 10k.

Go with the above Link and get another Oil Analysis!

The Googles say that manganese is sometimes used as an anti-knock additive in some types of fuel or fuel additives. Have you by chance been filling up at the VP Racing high octane pump?

Nope, only fill with Citgo\Chevron 89 Octane gas.

Could it be summer gas vs winter gas? Not sure there is a difference here in Florida.
Doubt it. I assume you didn’t use any aftermarket fuel treatment

Here’s an odd thought

Pure speculation so take it lightly

One station or multiple times added some kind of fuel treatment to their tank. I could think only of weird reasons to do that - like they cheaped out on some 87 or something nefarious, maybe had some mixed fuels.

No aftermarket fuel treatment added to the the tank. Since I use top tier gas all the time, I pretty much don't add anything.

I normally use the same two gas stations. Not sure if they ever did add anything. Only thing I can think of is I did fill up one early morning when the fuel tanker was there filling the gas stations tanks (not sure if it was the 89 octane gas tank). Could that have stirred up anything and then been pumped into the truck? That was like a month or so before I did my oil change though.

I’d keep an eye on it and do a few more UOAs to see if it stops or slows down. If it continues to rise then i would think you’ve got a wear problem within the engine. Manganese coating is used by many manufacturers on many engine parts: rings, camshaft’s, cylinders etc.

Looks good and in line with prior report. Viscosity is proper and 5k oci looks good. .02

Except the Manganese which went from 6 to 12 in almost a year. The avg is normally 4 for the testing on hemi's they do. That is why i am bit concern.

Coating or in iron alloys?

Yeah, even the 6 is weird. My reports all have it at 1 for our 1500 and 2 for my SRT.

That I do not know. I googled it and was surprised to learn how much manganese is used as a protective coating for internal parts.
Yeah, that’s what I am worried about. I mean so far I don’t have any problems and the truck is running fine.

I’d just drive it and not worry too much. It’s still very low miles. Many, many people have had great luck with the Hemi engines. OVERKILL knows a lot about Hemi’s. Don’t let me scare you into selling. If you like the truck…..drive it and enjoy.
