2018 VW GOLF-R

Hi guys

Just had the oil sampled on my son's 2018 VW Golf-R Mk7.5.
The oil that was in was Quantum 0w/20 which supposedly has a Visc 40C rating of 39.9. I don't quite understand why the Visc 40C rating has gone up.

The sodium is high, not sure why, the car is running fine and not losing any coolant.

Thoughts from the experienced hive mind would be much appreciated

As for the viscosity at 40c these UOA hardly ever match the companies numbers. Different labs etc. 7,553 "fluid hours" I'll assume is actually the mileage. Sodium is high, just watch the Potassium & if it keeps rising then coolant could be present. 5.3 ppm Fe is a bit high for that duration. Is this tuned or driven hard? Other metals look ok.

Why are you using 0w-20 in a Golf R? VW does not spec 0w-20 for the R engines...

This oil was probably done around 5-6K IMHO. Oxidation @ 23aBs probably contributed to the oil thickening. And yeah, why the heck are you using a 0W-20 for an R?

If OP is in the UK, VW 504.00 was probably the recommendation by VW.

I'd say Fe 40 ppm is somewhat "slightly elevated". So now we finally know what's to be expected when you run VW 508 00 instead of VW 504 00 on an R engine. Thanks for the insight.

This is a bit off topic, but I really like how this lab reports some of the trace metals like chromium to an extra decimal place.

The chromium coatings on the compression rings of many modern engines are so thin than even 1 ppm Cr can indicate significant wear, so it's not very helpful when a lab just reports it as 0 ppm.

The car has just done over 60,000 miles, it's not tuned, but it is driven quite hard, although only after the engine oil is up to temperature. The 7,553 miles is how long the sampled oil was in the engine.

I would have preferred it if it had been a blit lower as extrapolating to 10,000 miles it works out at 53 (against a preferred benchmark of lower than 50). That said it's way way lower than both the Audi and BMWs we have as well ! LOL

We put the car in for a full service with a VAG specialist who was recommended to us. It never occurred to me that they would have a used the wrong oil. I'm only now finding this out ! .
Another garage has just done this oil change and looking at the reciept they used VW504 5w/30.
