Just hit 6000 miles and changed the oil to 0w20 Magnatec. I've never really used castrol much but it was on sale and the regular price is around 21 dollars or so at walmart. I've heard rumors that Subaru's can be a little bit picky about oil especially M1. I bought this car new and plan on keeping it as long as it stays reliable so I want to use a quality oil and I'm willing to spend a little more if the oil really is better. I don't have much experience with boxer engines so any advice is appreciated.

That's what I used to use in my Toyota for the most part but it's usually sold out at my local walmart in 0w20 at least.

Napa has PP on sale until 6/30 for $4.99/qt, and there is a $2/qt rebate on top of that

You did fine with the Magnatec. Very good choice. As a matter of fact any quality 0W-20 is going to do great. Just wondering what you did for your filter? Subies have a somewhat special higher bypass pressure spec on their filters. In the future, I'd recommend either OEM or Wix 57055/NAPA 7055 as they are spec'd for the Subaru application.

Son has a 2017 Impreza and the wife has the 2.5 Forester. These are the lastest in many years of ownership in Subaru products here. Good luck with your car and rest easy with Magnetec in the crankcase.

First “synthetic” I ever saw flip in just 3k was Magnatec … even took the car to dealership … car was fine …

???

If you're going to change the oil every 6K you could use Supertech Full Synthetic which is currently $15.68 for the 5 quart jug.....it's dexos gen2. I'd bet your Subie would last just as long as if you used the pricier synthetic oils.

I went with a Subaru OEM filter but i might go with the wix later. How important is a new crush washer in your opinion? That's the reason I went with OEM because I might as well grab the filter while I'm there getting the washer anyway. I've never replaced a crush washer in my life and never had a problem but apparently they're important for subaru's?

I just put Magnatec 0W-20 in my daughter's 2015 Legacy, but any certified oil will be fine. Even Mobil 1.

Mobil 1 sometimes gets a bad rap in Subaru's based on running the wrong viscosity for the application. It has nothing to do with brand. Many, many folks modify their WRX's and continue to run the oil grade recommended in the owner's manual. "Hey, my WRX is making 400 whp from a BROTUNE and it runs through Mobil 1 like it's water! Rotella T6 5W-40 is the BEST OIL!"

^ Not saying that RT6 isn't a good oil to run but just an example of running the wrong oil grade for the application and comparing apples to oranges.

N/A Subaru's are fine running SoA's recommended grade. Congrats on the car!

edit: I've run the same crush washer for 3 or 4 intervals with no problems.

Fixed OCI! All Subaru's since ~MY2015.

Probably due to the old oil burning problem.

ST full synthetic is great oil at a great price. 0w20 was under $16 for 5 quarts at my Walmart the other day.

I think I've decided to go with Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy and an OEM filter from now on. It's not the cheapest option, but I think it's a good quality option. Unless of course I see a good sale on another brand. For regular everyday prices I think the Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy is about the best bang for your buck.
