I live in suburban area of Atlanta; also Imam leaning towards Castrol 0-20 synthetic and Mobil 1 XL filter. Help. Also how do you fill mixing synthetic engine oil just with a regular oil filter. Thank for your time and your replies.

In my Subaru which calls for synthetic 0W20 I am using NAPA brand which often goes on sale for $2.99.

If you have not changed the factory fill yet at 3500 change it now. Most of us would have changed it at 1000 or 1500.

This is the combo I use in my 2015 CRV.

One word of caution, though: my CRV dilutes engine oil with fuel like crazy even with mostly highway driving. So before you decide to rely solely on the oil life monitor you may want to get a used oil analysis performed by a lab that uses gas chromotography. My CRV suffers from >5% dilution and oil nearly diluted out of grade by the 3,500 mile mark, so I'm on a 4 month/4,000 mile OCI. Maybe Honda changed things in 2016, but they aren't exactly in a communicative mood on this subject...

If you are still under warranty, I would think the used oil analysis report would be enough to encourage warranty work. Have you tried that yet ?

Oh yes. My dealership has done what it can, but if the on-board diagnostics don't point to a problem (and they don't), all they can do is ask Honda tech support what to do. The answer seems to have been "nothing".

I took it up the ladder to American Honda Customer Service, opened a case, provided 5 used oil analysis and a decrpition of the issue. American Honda pretty much said "go away". Didn't say this level of dilution was "typical" or "harmless", didn't question the UOA vailidity, gave me no reason to believe my Honda was/wasn't compromised, etc. Not coincidentally, they also gave me no reason to consider buying another Honda.

Fuel dilution doesn't seem to be uncommon with the K24W/CVT combination. On another board I noticed Honda changed the thermostat on the 2016 Accord (same engine as the CRV) to increase coolant temperature by 9 degrees F. As I'm left to do my own diagnosis, I wonder if this is in response to fuel dilution issues. I'm not holding my breath waiting for a Honda TSB.

I thank for your replies good people;

I bought Mobil 1 0w20 Extended Performance 5qt at Walmart today for $30.00 and Frame Ultra Synthetic filter for $10 and that's going to me my first oil change; my goal is to have an oil change every 7-8k miles if possible so that get most for my buck and have a long life in my CRV.

Also, all the best to Honda fans here!

Good thought, but probably too late and there is the issue of whether or not my issue "...substantially impairs the value or use..." of the car. In any event, these things hold their value so well I don't think a lemon law buyback would be that much better than a trade-in. Will likely keep through the 5/60 power train warranty and buy something else. Maybe a Fiat...

No such thing as a oil filter for synthetic oil or Conventional oil. Filters are filters, some higher "quality " or different construction that may lend themselves to longer use intervals that go along with synthetic oils. But the "synthetic " oil filter is pure marketing.

For what it's worth I use Honda A01 filters made by Filtech. Many used oil analysis I have on my 2 vehicles show they work exceptionally well. For their cost I see no reason to use other brands marketed for "synthetic " oil or otherwise.

Solid choices.

I don't know how bad these engines develop valve deposits or cause fuel oil dilution. This is why I helped my mom get a 2011 CRV.

See used oil analysis showing how much fuel deletion over mileage before determining how long you can take an oil change.

I would recommend against this advice. Leave the factory fill in there until your MM hits 10-15%.

May I ask what year model your CRV is? I have a 2012 CRV and was wondering if I might have the same condition in my car.

Mine is a 2015. 2015 is the first year the CRV had direct fuel injection, which seems to be the culprit. Your 2012 has port fuel injection so shouldn't have this problem.

Hi!

I have a 2.4 I4 engine in my Accord sport too, 25,000 miles on it.

I'd suggest : Mobil 1 Extended Performance or AFE oil and the OEM Honda filter. Check out collegehillshonda.com and you could buy the filter off there.
Make sure to buy 15400-PLM-A01.

There are 2 types of Honda filters, "A01" and "B01". I think it is the location of filter manufacturing, but I've heard from multiple Accord sources that the "A" one is a better choice

Also, the dealer would tell you to use Honda Genuine oil (essentially Phillips oil in a Honda bottle) and change it in 5000 miles. It's a synthetic blend and the Maintenance Minder knows your engine's driving conditions better than the service advisor.
Should be 8500-9000 miles for your service light to come on

Actually the two part numbers are 15400-PLM-A01 and 15400-PLM-A02. The A01 is the Toko Roki filter assembled by Filtech in the U.S. A02 is a Fram manufactured Extra/Tough Guard clone made in Canada. If you like Fram filters, use the A02 part. If not use the A01. Long term I don't know what the availability of the A01 will be, but I can still find them readily available on the internet.
