2016 gmc sierra

Aren't those AFM 5.3's know to consume a bunch of oil? This might be an interesting battle. Would definitely explain the cat failure, and surely gonna happen.

I'm not an advocate of such, but it would be shame if a giant pothole wouldn't knock all the stuff out of the cats...
At what mileage does that start ?

But did you put 212k onto each of them?
First of all - any LT motor at 212k might burn oil …
Me? Previously over 150k … no consumption … now at 110k & 30k … None - But actually responding to the parrots 🦜
Does that one burn oil? Hopefully just a quart/less within OCI

I have a 2017 GMC Sierra crew 5.3 116k miles. Dropping the transmissionmission pan is a chore due to the brilliance of GM routing the exhaust system directly under the transmission pan. My transmission fluid exchange has always been extracting the fluid out through the dipstick tube with my West Marine oil extractor. It is typically 5+ quarts. As much as you’d get with a pan drop. If the transmission filter is dirty, changing to a new one won’t stop the damage that caused the dirt anyway. I usually do two extractions back to back. That’s getting at least 10 quarts of fluid in at each service. I drive several miles after the first, then extract a second round. So far so good. Use the heavier gear oil in the rear differential. GM specs lighter oil for fuel savings. Silly. I change engine oil-filter at 35% left on the oil life monitor. This typically equate to 5k oil changes. I’m brand loyal to Valvoline synthetics. Using Baldwin oil filters presently. Have most used PF63 Delcos. Have had several door lock actuators go bad. Not too bad of a job to replace. Now I have a tire monitor sensor that’s bad. Other than that just regular wear items…spark plugs and wires, filters (air & cabin), and brake pads. Used Delco brake pads that I ordered from Amazon. I think they’re counterfeit. They make a lot of dust like the old Autozone pads of the past. If a do over it would have been Akebono.
On our 2017 - after working the ATF pan free - added a B&M drain plug - other than changing the filter - I swap a pan volume in the cooler months before summer hits … Shifts great with Valvoline Extended Protection …

I do not know the exact specific science of it. I seem to recall a South Main episode (maybe even two where it's mentioned) of that era truck and it was burning some serious oil before 100K. I know a co-worker had a 5.3 AFM burn serious oil and eventually got traded in knocking pretty bad.

I don't have any scientific data to back anything up, as BITOG always seems to want the proof of paper, I just don't have it.

Did you have to drop the exhaust down, remove transmission mount bolts, and jack up the back of the transmission?

I have a 24 and I put 5W30 in on the first oil change. It will have 5W30 (or thicker) for the rest of the time I own the truck.

The dealer wrote him a check so all is well and lesson learned. I had afm on my 07 impala but it was the 3.9. As bad of a design as stop start, if not worse. I had a shop program the afm out and never a noticeable difference as far as fuel economy. The car was using oil when I traded it @110k, but nothing like this truck. 3plus qts in 500 miles is pretty catastrophic.

The truck market, at least here in Ohio is still crazy high. My son in law sold his 2017 2500 with 150k for $21500 not long ago. It was as bare bones as you can get and typical GM Midwest rust. Rubber floors and no options at all. This is an SLE and the underneath looks like it’s never saw an Ohio winter, which is almost impossible. Carfax showed all service at the local dealer. I drive it about 20 miles yesterday and minus the CEL for the catalytic converter, it’s tight for the miles.
Does he have money left from the win ?
Might want a rebuilt motor w/o AFM …

He took the money and bought a 2017 Titan platinum reserve with the 5.6 and 90k miles from an older gentleman whose health is failing. Original owner and a stack of dealer maintenance records. A few $k more, yet a much smarter purchase.
