Just looking for some advice on this truck. My son purchased a 1500 with the 5.3, high miles, 212k but extremely spotless and garage kept. The dealer replaced the timing chain and all the components that went back together during the process. The last GM product I had was an 07 impala with the 3.9 and afm that ended up being a total turd and horrible purchase. The carfax showed dealer service its entire life every 6-7k, yet nothing of any major substance. I figured we’d change out all the fluids and go from there, it did throw an engine code for needing a new catalytic converter, which the dealer is taking care of. I just fear he paid 15k for something he shouldn’t have bought.

$15k at sleazy sales places looking to empty ones pockets. It's a truck & perhaps they made it easy to finance but still. Unless theirs some sort of state buyers remorse refund policy within a time frame it's his now. My dad bought a 06' F-150 for the same price too and had issues w/coils shortly after. They were having some sort of outside "Sales" crew that comes in as high pressure which easily convinced him. That may not be the case w/your son though.

Just use it & pay the bill?

Well money is already spent whether it was a good deal or not. Now lets look at it on the bright side it was maintained regularly at the dealer. I would strictly run Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 for a long time 30k+ miles following the OLM then keep or switch to an oil of your choice. Just to make sure engine gets cleaned. Although engine internals are probably in pretty good shape if it was serviced regularly. Change the diff fluids, transferase if installed, and ATF/ Filter. Valvoline just came out with a Valvoline Restore and Protect ATF fluid and would be amazing too. Make sure to 2-3x drain and fills to make sure all the old a AFT is gone. After than you should be set for a long time.

I have a 2017 GMC Sierra crew 5.3 116k miles. Dropping the transmissionmission pan is a chore due to the brilliance of GM routing the exhaust system directly under the transmission pan. My transmission fluid exchange has always been extracting the fluid out through the dipstick tube with my West Marine oil extractor. It is typically 5+ quarts. As much as you’d get with a pan drop. If the transmission filter is dirty, changing to a new one won’t stop the damage that caused the dirt anyway. I usually do two extractions back to back. That’s getting at least 10 quarts of fluid in at each service. I drive several miles after the first, then extract a second round. So far so good. Use the heavier gear oil in the rear differential. GM specs lighter oil for fuel savings. Silly. I change engine oil-filter at 35% left on the oil life monitor. This typically equate to 5k oil changes. I’m brand loyal to Valvoline synthetics. Using Baldwin oil filters presently. Have most used PF63 Delcos. Have had several door lock actuators go bad. Not too bad of a job to replace. Now I have a tire monitor sensor that’s bad. Other than that just regular wear items…spark plugs and wires, filters (air & cabin), and brake pads. Used Delco brake pads that I ordered from Amazon. I think they’re counterfeit. They make a lot of dust like the old Autozone pads of the past. If a do over it would have been Akebono.

It’s completely decked out. 4 door with leather and just about every option available. The dealer put new BFGs on it and it truly is mint and the kid has won 27k on draft kings this month lol. So I guess it was more or less free. I’d just have an issue spending money on any vehicle that had 200k on it. It show 0w20 and takes 8 qts. I’d guess 5-30 with that many miles would be a better option.

I'd be significantly more concerned about a younger man (or any man) winning $27k USD online gambling.

I have never once heard of a happy ending by someone winning at gambling over the long run. But I have met numerous coworkers having their lives ruined by gambling.

He paid too much but it isn't a $5k truck like some here probably believe unless it's a rust bucket underneath. If it hasn't had the AFM failure by now it's probably not going to. Either of the current fave oils, Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-30 or Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30 would be good choices.

Hope you're not getting involved where it's not wanted, it sounds like he didn't ask you about it before he bought it. Letting kids own their decisions is hard, been there.

It was his money. I agree.

The truck market, at least here in Ohio is still crazy high. My son in law sold his 2017 2500 with 150k for $21500 not long ago. It was as bare bones as you can get and typical GM Midwest rust. Rubber floors and no options at all. This is an SLE and the underneath looks like it’s never saw an Ohio winter, which is almost impossible. Carfax showed all service at the local dealer. I drive it about 20 miles yesterday and minus the CEL for the catalytic converter, it’s tight for the miles.

Def not 0w20. And get his gambling under control. The house always wins eventually.

My involvement was cautioning against purchasing a 200k vehicle without knowing who owned it. He’s 26 and owns a roofing company and quite honestly makes an obscene amount of money for his age. Played d1 baseball and probably would have been drafted had Covid not shut down his college program, then met the girl who was the water to his oil. He got himself into some financial issues so financing isn’t an option without payday loan interest rates. The truck really is nice enough to consider looking for a low mileage engine if push comes to shove. He’s the middle child, so even though he asks my advice. He rarely takes it lol.

Scratch everything nice I said about this truck. He checked the oil when he bought it, nice and clean and a dealer sticker showing it was changed on 12-11. He started it this morning, less than 500 miles since he purchased it and add oil light went off. Bone dry dipstick and not a drip or leak to be found. I guess that explains why the catalytic converter went bad. The dealer is supposedly reputable, so we shall see. Burnt enough out of the 8qts to not even show up on the dipstick. Unbelievable!

Ouch, that stinks. I’d lean on the dealer hard to buy it back, although no guarantees there.

As far as DraftKings goes, I’m assuming he wontj money in a daily fantasy contest and not sports betting. Daily fantasy is at least somewhat a skill game but 95% of the money is won by 1% of the players, or something like that. If he won it on sports wagering, I hope he gets that under control because it’s extremely unlikely a casual, low wager bettor would ever make that in a month.

I’m not a gambler so I got that part wrong. I believe he said fan duel. I do know that it was during an nfl game and 11k to 1 odds popped up that the next play would be a TD by a specific RB. He put $300 on it and it paid off. He was sure it was some sort of a glitch but either way they paid it out. Every once in awhile, if I’m having a good day, I’ll buy a $20 scratch off to remind myself why I don’t gamble. He’s not a casino gambler, just more sports apps and always seems to do well. Minus the truck, he’s on a hot streak. He turned a 2k profit on the lions game yesterday. Being a lions fan, I have no idea how.

Aren't those AFM 5.3's know to consume a bunch of oil? This might be an interesting battle. Would definitely explain the cat failure, and surely gonna happen.

I'm not an advocate of such, but it would be shame if a giant pothole wouldn't knock all the stuff out of the cats...

I’m on my 4th and 5th 5.3L - they have displacement disco - but don’t consume oil …
