I have done UOAs on these oils, so you can find them in the UOAs section to give you an idea, and decide from there.

Yes, the engine is noisy, very noisy when very cold, but there was nothing special to say about it in the UOAs.

I did one year OCIs and I am easy on my cars.

Hope this helps.

Is it related to the 2.0L that was in the Sentra for a while? I rented a 2012 and it sounded like a tractor until it warmed up ... which was about 50 miles on the highway.`

No, same engine as the second generation: the QR25DE (or something close lol).

The 2.5l engine that you have also in the Altima.

At that time, you were not supposed to use 5w-20 in that engine, only 5w30, but when a member at Nicoclub did an UOA on the Fill factory and asked Nissan about it, we discovered that the car came with 0w-20 oil in it. So I decided to put PP 5w-20 (one of teh thinnest oil at the time) with no ill-effect, summer or winter.

The engine was rough and noisy after sitting all day in minus 30 celcius for about 5 minutes, a lot of lifters noise, but it is a known complaint.

Much depends upon his driving habits and/or if Nissan calls for a 3750 mile severe service interval on the vehicle. If he falls within severe service and it's that short of an interval, I'd grab a conventional 5w30 and be done with it. If he's just doing a bunch of highway miles and is going for longer OCIs, the 0w-20 might make more sense.

Book calls for 5000 miles either oil.

Best advise of the month.

Happy medium

Well, then that splits it right down the middle. Either would work, and whatever works best financially for him. 5,000 miles shouldn't be a stretch on a conventional 5w30, nor would 5,000 miles on a very reasonably priced synthetic be exactly a monumental waste, either. I'd lean towards the conventional, at least at the outset. The winters don't exactly justify a 0w-20 on their own, either.

This motor has been significantly revised from the 07-12 versions.
It also received VVT on the Intake, and exhaust side in the 13 Altima, and 14 model American built Rogue.
