2015 Lexus GX-460, First Oil Change?

Hi All,

Just bought a 2015 Lexus GX-460 with the 4.6 V8. Oil spec is synthetic 0w-20 The car was a "demo" and came to me with ~700 miles on it, and now has ~1100. Lexus will change the oil at 10k miles for free. I intend to do a change ahead of that and will use an OEM filter and the Mobil 1 "for Toyota" oil.

The question is when? 1.5k? 3k? 10k? Not needed?

At 3K I would change to Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20. I have found the AFE to be outstanding in both Fords.

Plan on keeping it forever and giving it to the grandkids?

Demo? I'd change it now and then stick with the 10k or yearly, whichever 1st, free OCI's. I'd also dump the front/rear diffs and transfer case out at 10k, flush the ATF every 30k, bleed brakes every 2 years, and dump coolant at 1/2 whatever the time/mileage limit....

If I had the wealth to buy a car like that, I would change the oil now. I would buy the oil and filter at the dealer, because I would want to use the same oil they use at 10k. I would change oil and filter again at 5k. The way you are going to do it, you have factory oil, then a Mobil 1 variant, then back to factory oil. Assuming they use Lexus branded oils, assuming there is such a thing. I think it is probably Toyota branded. It's like how much is the extra for dealer supplied oil compared to what the car cost? I'm not wealthy enough to buy the car, but I say it is peanuts to save on oil or extend oil changes to the max.

Surely a new Lexus has an Oil Life Monitor (OLM) light for the dash info display!? (I just looked it up, and Yes, it does....)
Don't target 10,000 miles. Miles mean almost nothing. Change the oil when the algorithm-monitor tells you to.
However, for now, the new engine has some extra metal circulating, so go ahead and change the break-in oil now. You are not required to do this, yet its a good idea. Then reset the OLM and follow it with any quality name-brand synthetic oil. I'd use the "extended perf" products like Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Castrol Edge gold jug for extra margin. And the best oil filter is a Fram Ultra for better filtering and capacity, the 2 things important there (not blind brand loyalty as others do).

Thanks everyone for their replies. Planning on keeping 8+ years, like her last vehicle. I'll do a change soon, using an extended perf oil and follow the OLM after that.

OLM will not measure if you have fuel dilution,

does it have an engine hour meter?
why don't ya check the condition of the oil by pulling the dip stick.
drive it another few thou and just drop the oil and put in new oil. no need to change filter.

Did some searching, Fram doesn't appear to make an Ultra filter for the Lexus 4.6 I've always used the OEM ones, any other suggestions?

No need to change the oil. Oil monitor uses mileage only. The oem oil is a great Mobil 0-20.

OEM, Fram TG or Purolator Classic (avoid PureOne or Bosch).

Nothing wrong with the Fram CH or TG oil fiter for your engine. Wix, Napa, Hastings, LuberFiner, ACDelco, STP, Mobil 1, Purolator, Promotive, K&N, Driveworks, MicroGuard.... are others.

Its a Lexus with free OCI's. For the initial change, any 0w20 + any brand filter is just fine.

Just to clarify, it's just the first oil change that's free... at 10k miles. I'm on my own after that.

I used to own a 2011 RX 350. I found it ran great using any off the shelf 0W20. The 2GR-FE isn't picky on oil at all.

Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 seems to be the most popular among the BITOG community.

I agree with Greasymechtech.

For a brand new GX I would keep FF for 5k miles, but with demo vehicle I change it out as soon as I drive it home.

If you bought a lexus new, the 1st service is also your opportunity to bring in all your complaints and things you want customized or adjusted or looked at on the car. Google CBEST settings.

Lexus also does 6months time OCI, so you can consider your first oil change due at that point, you don't need to get to 10k miles.

If I were you, I'd just do the Dealer service at 6months, taking that time to gather everything you want adjusted or isn't right.

If it makes you sleep better, go ahead and change the oil early. I personally think it's a waste and if I were in your position I would not bother.

If you are on your own, when you go back to the dealer, just pick up a few of Toyota filters+drain gaskets (or buy from ebay, there's ebay sellers who bundle these up for you in 5packs and 10packs).

I don't think there is benefit from going aftermarket, people just think that the dealer is out to get them, even though aftermarket is more expensive and not necessarily better.

What about when it comes to oil quality?

It includes that in calculations using piston loading (fuel charge), temperature, and RPM, so it does predict blow-by contamination well.

You can't tell how an oil is doing by looking at it. OLM does count engine revolutions too.

For oil filters there sure is better. Being blindly Toyota-brand loyal means you won't get the best product in most cases. For example, nobody makes an oil filter like Fram Ultra, wire-backed, dual layer synthetic media, highest filtering efficiency, highest dirt capacity, etc. Sorry its not a Toyota oil filter, as I guess that brand gets the nod from people who don't want to think.
