Hey BITOG fans, so I was shot down by my girlfriend with getting the mustang, and now she wants a CRV since we plan on kids, etc. Not paying the ridiculous oil change prices either so I will be doing it myself. Anyone know a great 0W-20 oil and filter combo? Suggestions appreciated guys

Most every name brand oil is good. Just get whatever is cheapest e.g. Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy, PP, etc. Fram Ultra, Napa Gold/Platinum, M1, etc are all good filters.

If you are getting a small SUV you might want to look at a Forester too - better mileage, better crash tests, better visibility
 
We just got a new CRV, and after years of changing oil and filters on Accords, it was a pleasure to find the CRV has the drain and filter placed conveniently next to each other at the bottom of the block. I just used a Wix and SynPower - both were on sale at NAPA. I'll change them again in 5,000 miles.
 
Ok, perfect combo here...TGMO (Toyota Synthetic 0w20) and a Fram Ultra for 1 or 2 OCI's. If you can not find TGMO or can not find it at a decent price, Mobil 1 0w20 or Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 with a Fram Ultra would be my next pick(s). The K24 is a good engine, treat it right with a decent oil and filter at the proper OCI and it will go many miles.

Edit: Before anyone blows up about me saying the "perfect" combo, I am only joking. Any name brand 0w20 and decent filter changed at reasonable intervals will keep this engine going for a long time. Thats the combo I use in the Accord and I have had good results from it.

Follow the manual, I use api 5/20 or 5w30 7500 oci and 15k fci never spend more than a buck per qt. or $2 for a oil filter. Save yourself alot of time and money by doing what Honda tells you to do.
 
I would suggest you buy the vehicle first, then worry about which oil you need.

^and I'll also recommend that you buy a Forester, if nothing other than to [censored] off that guy ^

Check out Safercar.gov: frontal crash score for CRV--5 star, frontal crash score for Forester--4 star. Does not look to me like Forester has better crash tests.

According to Fuelly.com both are averaging about 26 MPG in real world driving. Of those two I would only choose the Forester if off road capability is of high importance.

Looks like IIHS has more detailed results. I stand corrected. I'm disappointed with the discrepancy between the two results--it seems misleading.

You be even more disapointed if you searched for actual fatal injury rates, which are often contrary to what the artificial impact tests might lead you to believe.

...and, you're qualified to render this judgement by virtue of what?
We've had three Subarus, eight Hondas, four Benzes, two BMWs as well as a number of other cars, most of which we drove to high miles.
I can't say that I've ever found Subarus to be poorly engineered.
When it comes to getting through real snow or off-road use, the CRV and the Highlander are both bad jokes as compared to a Forester.
Compared to a turbo Forester, either is simply dead at the line.

I just remember the 2014 Forester being highly touted in the results it received. Seems confusing (as with any rating system) as people may not know where to check.

All I know is they are much safer than my used cars and someday I'll upgrade (once those are used enough, most likely)
 
The "new" car in your signature sounds a whole lot more entertaining than anything I've ever driven home.

From personal experience, I would recommend Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 or EP, and a Fram ULTRA filter. Has worked great for me, and with 7,500 OCI's (to keep under warranty) and you'll be able to use the ULTRA filter through two OCI's.
