Have a 2014 CRV in the family with about 125k miles. Over the past year, it's had an intermittent shudder and vibration that was getting worse. They took it into the dealer, got the trans fluid changed and it got a lot better, until recently. Took it back to the dealer, they said the TC was bad and it's $1600 to replace it. I haven't driven it since the initial issue, which felt like a TC issue, so that's not surprising and that price seems fair. My question is, isn't there a risk that the TC self-destructing has sent metal throughout the trans and damaged it? Had the TC fail in my Liberty (42RLE lol) and got the whole trans rebuilt just for that reason. Thoughts?

I'm wondering if several flushes might help. Years ago, on a 2014 CRV that I still work on, I did 3 drain and fills with VML and the shudder never returned. As a matter of fact, I just did it again last month as preventative maintenance and it took drive down to Florida without any issues. Good luck!

At some point some of the Honda transmissions started getting an internal filter, but for many years it was a screen. Draining some fluid out for a sample wouldn’t be the worst thing to do. Is the 14 a geared transmission or is it a CVT?

Google search looks like the filter is a paper element, so there’s actually a decent chance any nasty bits would be caught by that before getting sent upstream. Caught soon enough, the rest of the unit might have some life left in it.

If it were mine, I’d probably consider the decision based on how many more miles I hope to get out of it. These are nice vehicles.
