I know not too many people on here have this car, or probably have seen this car, so I figured I'd share a little bit.

The Smart is probably one of the most hated cars out there and I am not sure why. I feel like people think you are making a statement by driving this car; like driving a Prius. In the 2 years that I have owned it, it has been broken into three times, I have had the antenna stolen 3 times, had it keyed BADLY (5 stripes), had someone put their cigarette out on it and left it for me to see it, had it turned sideways in a parking spot, and everyone feels the needs to collapse my mirrors on the curb side of the car, just for fun.

I live in NYC, so parking is at a premium and I didn't want to pay $400/month for parking and I need the car for work everyday, so I bought the Smart. It is great for what it is-- a small car for parking. Its suspension has limited travel, so it crashes over bumps, the engine is very anemic and does not get great gas mileage for the size of the car or for a 3 cylinder engine, the transmission is clunky (but ingeniously simple), and the engine is loud and rough. The handling is also very poor and it leans and does not change directions quickly. The strengths of this car are its very strong (and oversized) brakes, headlights, and steering. Visbility is also very good and it feels much roomier inside than its dimensions would make you think. The car, and myself, also survived a rear end collision at about 20mph with a Ford Explorer, and I was able to drive the car to the collision shop. On the topic of collision repair, the plastic body panels are fantastic and are [censored] near impossible to dent.

So there you have it, a quick and dirty review of the Smart ForTwo. Anyone here have experience with it?

I see them practically given away on used car lots here in Utah. $6 to 7k buys a practically new under 30k miles smart car.

I could never drive one for two reasons. 1. I know how good the diesel version is and we don't get that one here. 2. I needs my space. Gotta love the wagon!

I have always wondered if the Smart car would fit in the bed of a F250 size pick up? It would be a spare car to take with you.

You would need a long bed with a platform built up to get over the wheel wells but i'm sure you could get a Smart into a F250.

I've considered a Smart since they are both economical and cheap.
Problem is you can buy a real car with a back seat and the same or better fuel economy for about the same dollars.
I see a couple of Smarts regularly on my daily commute, one of which has a vanity plate reading "ME SO BIG".
Nothing wrong with the car or your having it.
I don't know why anyone would think that they should mess with your ride over any other.
People should leave others property alone.
People wonder why we have such high arrest and incarceration rates in our country.
This is why.

I see them in my travels. Sometimes I'll blow past one doing 55 in a 65 zone where most everyone else is doing 75+.

They are very small.

I like the Prius and think they have a lot of great technology in them and they look fine to me. The Prius interior is too spartan for me and that price point but they are very popular. Probably the most popular car in my neighborhood.

That's too bad. None of the flaws you mentioned are deal breakers for a NYC car. Every time I visit it is such a foreign experience to see all the cars with dinged up bumpers. Around here if you dinged a bumper your insurance would be buying that car owner a new bumper. Despite the issues I always thought they would be excellent city cars. Too bad we have to share the world with inconsiderate slobs.

Look for the "Top Gear" segment in which they tested the crashworthiness of the Smart for Two. It did surprisingly well, even against larger vehicles. It took crashing it at high speed into a solid concrete barrier to destroy it.

I don't know about NY but we have special parking spaces reserved for cars under 10'

Cars like this have their place in an urban environment.

Too bad you were not allowed the Diesel version.

I find the fuel economy an odd contradiction as well, but this is really designed to be a CITY car. It may be geared more toward driving around town and not for extended high RPM travels.

It's an oddity is the U.S., but I'll bet it looks right at home in most European cities.

EPA on a 2013 coupe is 34 city 38 highway. Only 38 highway?! My wagon can easily get 38 or higher on the highway with 5 seats and up to 66 cuft of cargo space.

I could understand having one in a super cramped city but honestly i couldn't see myself living in such an environment anyway.

I did think about getting an all electric one of these just for lols.

I had a mini cooper and the engine dropped a valve. It was hard finding parking with the Mini Cooper (about a half hour sometimes), the Smart if I look for 5 minutes thats a long time.

Yes, had a Mini Cooper before. Was too big! haha. You don't know how bad parking is in NYC. Survival of the smallest!
