2013 Silverado when I grab the back wheels and rock the truck side to side it makes a loud clunking noise and the tires fill loose I just got the truck 2 weeks ago I guess I should have looked it over better because I really regretting it

I just had one of my buddies look at it and he crawled underneath of it while I shook it and I guess he has some experience with these rear ends and he said that it's my entire axle moving inside and that something may need shimmed or something of that nature and he said something about checking the tolerances with some kind of paint or something LOL I don't know but he said it's definitely not right so I guess we'll see where that goes he's supposed to help me look at it Sunday

IMO, there's too much shaking to see what's going on in the video. It doesn't look like the axle housing is moving to me.

I'd lift the rear up (block the front wheels), pull in and out slower, and try to isolate what's moving.

Here is the Link to what it's doing

Now that is kinda weird.

Do you have any other symptoms? Do you believe you hear this while driving? Any noise in turns or noise that is throttle dependent?

It does seem you might have excessive play either at the wheel bearing or the side gear in the diff (up/down, not linear along the shaft)

Some of the older ones had a drive spline slipping/binding noise in the front transmission yoke. Not much you can do about that.

Yeah a clanking noise and has some road noise when going down highway
Yeah so if the clanking noise is truly coming from the rear axle and not something else, that's not right.

Based upon your video, I can believe it would make noise while driving.

As they say at the end of every multi-million dollar study, "further research is required."

I would say that the flexof the tire in and out is a bit much, but that might just be the tire flexing under your gorilla strength.

Sounds more to me like a bushing or maybe a loose mount, like to a shock or leaf, or rear sway bar link.

As many have said, the "in and out" of the axle is normal, c clip movement.

I suggest jacking up the rear, removing the tires and rear rotor, this will give you access to the axle. There should be little no movement up down toward the front, or back, only a "sliding" in and out of the axle housing.

You might try oiling some of the bushings in the rear with PB blaster. Oil one bushing, then shake and test, and repeat. It would be cheap, easy, and if you do not find the issue, you now have some nice wet bushings.

Even spray the leaf springs

If you get under the truck and have someone else shake, you might be able to see, or even feel and give a better proximity to the issue.

My guess is a bushing.

I dunno, watching the vid full screen and focusing on the centerline of the axle tube running out to the (imagined) WMS, it sure looks like the two move independently in ways they shouldn't.

BUT, it absolutely could just be an optical illusion. I'd love to get hands on this thing because I'm really curious. Alas, diagnosing from an armchair won't ultimately solve OP's problems so I'd like to know what he finds.

OP, if you can have a second person HOLD or PRELOAD certain components while you shake, that might really help. As suggested, items like shocks, sway bar links (if applicable), rear spring shackle and even front spring eye (preload with a pry bar wedged in there).

Yeah whatever it is is definitely loose in the hub area it's kinda surprising I'm having theses problems considering it just now hit 120k miles hopefully it's just a wheel bearing or something easier and cheaper to fix considering I just paid 10k for the thing

So did you spray some bushings to see if it was a bushong noise? I had a similar noise on my daughter tahoe.....a shock bolt had worked loose.

good luck

Can some please explain radil play I tried to Google it but can't find anything explaining how to check it or what it is I have a dial indicator and I kno how ro measure end ton end play is there anything else I need to check
