2013 Pentastar 5w-20 vs 2012 being 5w-30???

I just found out that 2013 3.6L Pentastars are certified for 5w-20 while my 2012 is certified for 5w30...is this correct?!?

will the 2012's be re-certified for 5w-20 and how do I find out? thanks

Chrysler hasn't back-spec'd anything to my knowledge. The EDZ engine in my Breeze for instance, dates back years and forward all the way to 2012. Despite this, the only 2012 variant of the EDZ engine to be approved for 5W-20 is the PT Cruiser (non turbo). I've run 5W-20 without issue.

Probably if you want warranty stick with 5w30, but really, 5W-20 will be fine. Chrysler just don't say so, they don't wanna be liable.

No back spec for the 2012. Stick with 5W30.

I recently took my '12 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Pentastar for an oil change and the Jeep dealer put in 5W20. Service manager said they were putting 5W20 in the '12 Pentastar's. I am not worried about warranty since the dealer will be handling the oil changes. I used to change my own oil, but I just couldn't pass up the ~$14 oil change deal.

I have 3 free oil changes written into the sales deal & Jeep sent me a certificate for another free oil change...

curious so I know what weight of 'top-off' oil to buy (I have 2 qts of 5w30 now since that is what the factory fill was)

If you just need oil for top offs, its easy...

Anything. You can top off with 5w30, 5W-20, 15w40, 20W-50, straight 30, 20W-20...

Top offs account for so little oil in a new vehicle (that shouldn't burn much oil) that its effects will be almost nil.

Yup, I failed to mention that, but I had the same type of offer ... they threw in a few free oil changes to use over two years and then I will call and get the ~$14 oil change offer when that is up.

I plan to keep using 5w30 in mine -- unless I receive a written letter otherwise. I never need top up. The only thing I've had to top-up in the past 10+ years, is the mower.
