My 2010 Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 Hemi in it calls for 5W-20 oil as it requires that weight for the MDS system to function correctly.

I want to run a certified oil in order to meet my extended warranty requirements so Amsoil, Redline and so on are out of the running.

What certified over the counter synthetic in the 5W-20 weight is showing good results in both oil analysis and user feedback?

Thanks for the help.

I think on new Chrysler products the dealer recommends every 3,000 miles but the manual says change at 6000 miles or oil change prompt whatever comes first

5sfe91;

Most new Chrysler stuff has an OLM and they just say to go by it. However, they add a 6months/6K MAX which ever comes 1st note in there so if you hit 6000 or 6 months and the OLM has not tripped you need to change the oil. I assume the new Jeep will be the same.

Any of the name brand oils( Mobil, Pennzoil, Quaker State, Valvoline )you can get in bulk jugs at Wal-Mart will have the correct weight and certifications you need( sometimes hard to find 5W-20 in all of them at Walmart in the 5QT jugs but the oil companies do offer it ). Any of them would be a good choice.

Another good choice would be Kendall. They offer a blend and full syynthetic that are very affordable and very good in 5W-20. Meets all of your warranty requirements as well. I have recently been converted over to the ConocoPhillips mfg'd Kendall oils. Have a few family vehicles running it now and they are doing great on it. They are using the GT-1 full syn. Just @ $4.99 a qt from PepBoys.

Also, just FYI, Amsoil offers a 5W-20 that meets your warranty requirements. It is in their XL line. It has the correct API certification you need and I have no doubt it meets( probably far exeeds )the Chrysler MS6395 oil standard. IF you can get it for a reasonable cost it will be goood for your OCI limits and would be a good choice.

rraiderr,

I have basically the same motor in my 05 GC Limited. These motors are very smooth no matter what 5w-20 you run in them.

Make sure it is ms-6395 certified for your warranty. Most 5w-20's are but, check the spec sheet before you run it. Yes it has to be 5w-20 for the MDS system.

I am currently running a Wix filter and Pennzoil Ultra 5w-20. Very nice oil but spendy because of the 7-7.5 Qt sump!

I just picked up 8 Qt's of the new gf-5 Pennzoil Conventional and will be running that next. Being under warranty like you, I only run 4K OCI's so synthetic seems like a waste but, had to try the hype! :)

Looks like the Amsoil has these certs.

XLM 5W-20 Synthetic Motor Oil

*
API SM/CF, SL, SJ ...
*
ILSAC GF-4, 3 ...
*
ACEA A1/B1
*
JASO VTW
*
GM 6094M
*
Ford WSS-M2C930-A
*
Daimler Chrysler MS-6395N

Does the warranty call for a GF-5 or only a MS-6395N to be compliant?

Thanks for the awesome info Huie83

The XL line does not actually carry those mfg's oil standard "certifications". It just meets or exceeds those standards. At least to my knowledge it is not actually certified( if I am wrong I apologize to those who will be offended ). I haven't seen lists for all of the mfg's but I have seen the GM one and Amsoil XL was not on there. Just certified through API but that is what really matters anyway.

However, meeting is all that is required in regards to a car mfg's standard. API certification is required certification but the mfg's own standard is not. Again, it just needs to "meet" it( or exceed ).

This is directly from your vehicle's owner's manual( well not your specific one but your year and model )about oil requirements...

and meet the requirements of Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395.

No need to worry about the new oil standard coming out( GF5? Doesn't sound right but maybe ). This is what you need to concern yourself with...

5W20
API Certified w/ Starburst( Service Level SM - shown in API donut on back label )
"Meets" MS6395
Change by the OLM( 6 months/6000 miles Max )
