2013 Mustang V8 oil recommendations

Hello,
I have the coyote motor factory fill is 5w20 semi synthetic motorcraft. Wanted to know known problem with this motor and what is the best oil. It is my secondary vehicle and won't see winter and will be brought to the dragstrip occasionally along with maybe a track day next year. But for the most part babied.

The Motorcraft Oil is very good stuff. It's priced well too. For general driving, I'd say there's no need to look elsewhere for a good oil.

However, the Drag racing does pose a little different challenge... but I don't see a few runs now and again calling for a racing oil.

I currently run all my Fords from 4 to 8 cyls on Mag1 Semi Syn 5w-20....

5w20 for a blast on the dragstrip?
What kind of loads and revs are you reaching on the dragstrip?
I would shudder at the thought of using a watery oil like a 20 for such shear forces.
Racing oils are normally in the 50-60 range.

I ran Pennzoil platinum 5-20 in the 2007 GT I had. I had full bolt-ons and cams. Probably went to the track once a month a did 7 or 8 runs that night. I would also do full throttle runs all the time in it on the freeway. Unless you are hot-laping it 10-15 times every week and just beating the snot out of it, 5-20 will be fine.

I do have a couple of modds: CAI, Catback exhaust and a bamma tune . Bumps stock hp from the wheels 374 to 403. I thought about using Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 because I know the boss 302 uses 5w50 being essentially the same motor figured I would go up a step in weight without paying more because walmart sells the Pennzoil Ultra on sale all the time.

Twice at drag racing meets I have run 0w30 in my car without any problems at all. My factory recommendation is 0w-40.

When we race, we raise the hood between runs and cool the car down. Very little hot lapping occurs. It's a whole lot different from road racing.

Good advice.
You don't generate high oil temp's at the strip so a 20wt oil is the ticket in fact if you want to minimize frictional losses I'd suggest the Toyota 0W-20.
For hot-lapping at the track make sure you've got a good oil pressure gauge. You may not need to run anything heavier than a 20wt but your OP is the best way to know if you actually to need to run anything heavier. Running a heavier than necessary oil is counter-productive as it allows the bearings to run hotter due to the reduced oil flow.

Why ouch? I've said it sooo many times on these forums,we've got guys at our local track running 5w20 weight oils in their supercharged AND N/A Mustangs at our 1/4 mile tracks,and no mechanical failurs or issues.Never seen such a forum obsessed with heavy-weight oils.

You could also run Mobil 1 0w30, which has a slightly higher HT/HS of 3.0 vs 2.6-2.8 for most 20 grades.

The 0w30 meets GM 4718M, so it can handle high temperatures well. I think it would be a nice "in the middle" option.

Otherwise, MC 5w20 or any synthetic 0w20 should work well.

+1 Sounds like sound advice to me.

The 5.0 Coyote in the Mustang runs hot. It's jammed in the engine bay and the tubular headers throw off alot of under hood heat. On my '11 GT during spirited, back-road high RPM driving I've seen oil temps at 250' at 90' ambient.

The oil does cool fairly quickly once you back down. Another thing to consider, the 2011-12 5.0 have piston oil squirter's to help internal cooling, it was eliminated on the '13's as a cost savings (except Boss). Ford did add functional heat extractors to the hoods of the '13's to try and address the high under hood temps. Also the Boss has a oil to water cooler stock and spec's 5W50.

For short blasts on the strip, a good 5W20 syn should work fine. For more extended high-rpm stuff like track-days, I would run 5W30/5W40. I use 5w30 PP...the valve train is noticeably quieter than with the 5w20 Motorcraft. My own opinion is that if Ford didn't have to worry about onerous CAFE penalties, they probably would recommend a higher viscosity oil for "severe" service operation.

But does that mean that it's better protected? I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I have done the Ford 5w-20 thing here now for at least 6 years on 4 Fords...

How do you measure the noise? Not by ear, I hope you are using a sound measuring device.

For normal street use and occasional drag racing, stick with the factory-recommended 5w20. Drag races don't last long enough to get the oil hot enough to worry about. Once you go and do a track day, you may need to go thicker, but don't go crazy. A high quality synthetic 5w30 would probably be fine. Motorcraft's 5w50 is very shear-prone, and ends up being a 30-weight if it is run hard enough.

I' go up in viscosity for the track day.
Leave the excellent 5-20 Motorcraft in otherwise.

Many guys step on the gas more in street driving than in 14 [whatever] seconds of drag racing.

BTW, is it 1/8 or 1/4 mile?

Min Factory recommendations is for normal road use.
My normal road use specs requires min. 10w50 oil (alfa romeo).
Hard spirited driving under loads requires a thicker oil.
You are revving 7-8000 rpm under load.
Dragstrips I dont have any experience with but I imagine the bearings/journals are under extreme loads.

LMAO,
We're talkin a 13-second car from the showroom floor,that gets beat up on from ford engineers themselves,but it's "different" when a regular guy takes it out to the drag strip for alil fun,yeah ford knows what the general public does with these cars,and they do just fine with the oil that is spec'd for them.
